A Few Busybodies Have Destroyed A Dream For NYC
NY Post ^ | 9/16/2017 | Steve Cuozzo

The collapse of Barry Diller’s Pier 55 dream is without parallel in the annals of willful, malicious New York City obstructionism. There’s no glimmer of hope, no encouraging lessons to be drawn, no down-the-road silver lining.

Diller’s reasonable decision to walk away from a vision that had already cost him tens of millions of dollars more than he’d planned, and which might well never be built even had he sunk in tens of millions of dollars more , is a civic tragedy of Shakespearean scope. We’re left with the oft-repeated, defining word of “King Lear” — nothing.

And, as in the play, nothing will come of nothing.

Pier 55 would have brought the city and the world a magnificent recreational pier more like an island — a 2.7-acre oasis of rolling meadows and groves and a 700-seat amphitheater 186 feet from the foot of West 13th Street, reached by two picturesque pedestrian bridges.

Poor, poor Barry . . . I guess Trump might be less evil than the leftist whack jobs who destroyed your vision . . . I love the smell of liberal napalm battling environmental napalm in the morning . . . :)

We forgot how a tiny band of well-heeled activists and a single, environmentally-absorbed judge could prevail over common sense and the will of the majority — including, for Pier 55, the entire West Village community, normally warring Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio, and all of the city’s major newspapers.

Welcome to my world, succer. Conservatives have been thwarted in their quest for reasonable infrastructure and development for decades now by the EnviroNazis and their enablers like Sierra Club. Goose, meet gander. Pot, meet Kettle. Trump needs to blow up the EPA -- the Agency and the Act (Environmental Protection Act). Flat blow them up.

Sounds like Barry Diller should devote another $40 milion to making Douglas Durst miserable by going after all of his projects. Let the left fight each other.

Eh? Without an environmental impact study? Where will the debris go?? How about ameliorating the air pollution from the explosives??? Where will the carbon offsets come from????

So go to another city and build it - or build 10 for the cost of 1 in NY City.

For example, several Great Lakes cities would trip over themselves for a rich philanthropist to come and give their citizens greater access to or another venue to enjoy the Lakes

In America, NY City is giant spoiled brat. Even though industry has fled, it remains important merely because it remains the world center of trading in America’s debt-based, Federal Reserve, crony-capitalist monetary system. Its wealth is used to run a giant nanny state, which elects, ironically, a Marxist as its Mayor.

Where did those tens of millions dollars go?

Somebody got richer off of this little shakedown.

A lot of liberals just can't think outside the NYC box.

It is quite obvious that progressives are simply regressive. We do not see the dreams from our science fiction and comic books from childhood for a reason. Why should anyone be surprised? There are many on the left knowingly or oblivious to the fact that their utopia ultimately looks like a mash of China,Valenzuela,Cuba and North Korea stamped with made in USA.

That sounds a bit like Blade Runner. We need to find a Deckard to work on cleaning up the city. (Sorry for the mixed comparison.)

What ever happened to the Ground Zero mosque? I recall how liberals were all in favor of that project.

There was a two block vacant lot in Inglewood CA which had a chain link fence around it. The city put out a call fore ideas for development and Disney responded. The city had several hearing during which they made demands on disney which had nothing to do with the development. Disney was bringing hundreds of jobs and a first-class development to the area which was sadly in need.

One day disney CEO walked past his paling office and asked what’s happening in Inglewood. Two nights later eisner and three of his staff showed up at the city council meeting. they repeated the demand for addition al “investment” money for unproven social programs and rigid restrictions on what Disney could do. eisner led his staff out without saying a word and never returned to Inglewood.

Two years later Walmart left the project after promising two other anchor stores and large shopping center. the unions got to the city and wanted to restrict Walmart;’s size and control the planning for the entire lot. Walmart said, we will build in a nearby city, thank you.

If you read bonfire of the vanities you will get a fictional view of how paralyzed some of these places are.

If I recall correctly, Walmart had trouble building stores in Washington, DC, inside the District of Columbia. And there were similar issues of the city wanting to control how it was developed, other “investments” to be required, etc.

I wonder if that’s in the Democrat playbook, that you insist on various ancillary spending to be done by companies seeking to locate in your community. But then, you can see they would rather see land stay a vacant wasteland, than be put to productive use. Because when companies such as Disney or Walmart pull out, then nothing happens in these wastelands.

I can’t believe they would rather see vacant spaces used by drug dealers and God knows what other low lifes, doing God knows what, rather than see productive use.

Grocery u ions in California tried to prevent super Walmarts by having cities limit the size of the store by sq ft. This gif course may keep other claret big box stores out. But the grocery unions don’t care about the city.

Walmart not being stupid came up with the concept of Neighborhood Walmart with a small supermarket and pharmacy. Their pharmacy near me is greta and the store is 24 hours. When you have some latitude for capitalism smart people will find a way to do business and city council members in union pockets will harm their own city.

Should be remembered that Trump built a whole skyline on the west side of Manhattan. He fought against the same people to get the job done.
