Dating is in decline among young people, a major study has found.
Those born between 1995 and 2012, dubbed the i-Generation, are noticeably less interested in romance than their millennial predecessors, according to a new book by Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University.
Teenagers from this group have grown up with social media and smart phones, meaning they spend far more time socialising with one another online than they do in person.

Liberal/Progressive DemocRAT philosophies and there results in culture.
Public dating once was mandatory to keep the reputation of the virginal woman. Now, when two people are interested in each other, they want to be alone somewhere (and they don’t necessarily have to have sex each time), and they often don’t have a spare $100 to go to dinner and a movie.
They said 20 years ago. Boys and their toys.
>>>On the bright side these young people are too busy on social media and like to have sex.<<<
HD porn on demand is here and it’s relatively new, last 10-12 years. Couple that with men acting more feminine and women acting more masculine and you have a recipe for less interest in the opposite sex. Toss in a heavy dose of video gaming to give men/boys the sense of accomplishment, without really doing so and you now have a world where guys would rather take care of their sexual needs themselves and play video games. But the ladies have facebook and instagram to post selfies and compete with other women. So life will go on
What a sad dystopia you describe. Unfortunately I agree with you.
This is troubling how society is evolving.
Less random sexual activity and less pregnancy is good. But, then you wonder, what about other issues such as low rates of marriage? Most women eventually will get sexually involved and eventually have children. But huge percentages of children are being born out of wedlock, perhaps the most we’ve ever seen percentage wise.
But then, it’s not good for young men to indulge in pornography which causes them to have less interest in real girls. It’s not good for young men to play video games for hours on end and not do anything productive with their lives.
Then again, we could talk about “enabling”; how is it that these guys have all this time to play video games? Do they live in momma’s house? Being supported by momma well into adulthood? What about getting an education or getting a job?
And what about dating? How are young people going to make decisions about who to marry, if not some sort of dating situation? Then again, maybe they are voting NO altogether to the idea of marriage and family. That is not a healthy trend for society long term.
I would certainly hope someone born in 2012 would not be dating.
As a life guard, I work with a number of millennials. A handful are really amazing and very similar to Gen Xers, but the majority are these really vapid, unhappy ghostwalkers. No religion, no souls, no clues... they love their dating apps like Grindr (for the gay ones), Tinder and the like.
But so many of them are terrified of meeting complete strangers.
I tell them of my clubbing days in the 80s and 90s when I would, horror of horror, associate with complete strangers (I was active in the punk scenes in various cities.) I actually made friends in the *real world* by just *talking to people* without the safety net of a computer screen.
I call them toddlers and tease them about their safe spaces and trigger warnings — and that actually infuriates them because they know what sad creatures they are.
Why date when you can have f-— buddies?
NOW’s stated goal was to smash monogamy (as was a stated goal of the Weather Underground).
Tear down the underpinnings of society. Kill the culture. Let the inmates run the asylum.
I may get criticized for saying this, but, maybe the military would help some of these young people? Military life and discipline has turned around some people’s lives. The life lessons they learn in the military can benefit them for their entire lives, when they return to civilian life after their enlistment is over.
These shiftless slacker types will not be able to be that way, when face to face with their drill sergeant in boot camp.
I have five kids who are mostly in this group. And I disagree. Formal dating like you pick the girl up at the door and take her to dinner and the movies, is out. Normally, you hang. You go to a party together. Or you do normal things like shopping or hiking or fix shelving in an apartment. My kids are on their phones texting constantly. But they are also social and they meet up with their friends or boy friends often too.
Remember some of the kids in this age group are only 8 years old. My kids are 15 to 25. And millennials as an age group run from 1983 to 2000. Its easy to remember if they were born before 2000 and turned 18 after 2000 they are a millennial. Other age groups follow the end of WWII. Boomers are 1946 to 1964. Generation X follows 1965 to 1983. Its every 18 years starting 9 months after the end of WWII. Some studies define it differently because that is the group they have to study. Not because the group is special in any way.
Agreed. I too saw this in my university days in the early 1990s. I’ve often thought that things like that were that more structured and idealized back in my parents’ day (late 1960s) and the number of years prior to and after that time.
Yep that’s a very troubling trend.
If we are saying that a *$&% buddy can take care of that activity, why would anyone ever think about getting married?
Awful. 1984 gets all the attention, but Brave New World has really come to pass as well. Grown toddlers on tranquilizers, scared of their own shadows and horrified by unapproved thoughts.
So Generation Y became the Millennials? The baby bust (generation X) occurred between 2 booms. Assigning a year to block a generation (like 2000) is nonsense. It is nomenclature and nothing cultural or demographic.
Dr. Spock ran with Dick Gregory for President (on at least some states’ ballots).
Which brings to mind, how was Gregory’s campaign “legit” since he had different running mates on the ballot in different states? Say he HAD won, who would’ve been his VP?
Electoral College has separate votes for Pres and VP. The VP candidate with the majority of the EC is VP.
If no EC majority, US Senate picks from top two.
>>>Then again, we could talk about enabling; how is it that these guys have all this time to play video games? Do they live in mommas house? Being supported by momma well into adulthood? What about getting an education or getting a job?<<<
Obviously you have some guys underachieving and prolonging their adolescence into their 20s while their parents let him live at home. But you can also be addicted to video/PC games and work and be successful earning money. The average American watches over 4 hours of TV per day. If you ever heard the term cord cutters, it’s talking about Americans who stop paying for TV. But millions of Americans never started to pay for TV in the first place. Some guys would rather game the hours that their neighbors spend watching TV. So in that sense, it’s just a choice of how you spend your free time.
I’m saying playing games in and of itself doesn’t ruin you for relationships. But the sense of achievement you can get in these games can confuse you, that you are accomplishing something, when you are really just having an enjoyable evening of entertainment.
I agree with you. If you asked any of them to go to an event alone, they couldn’t do it successfully.
But then they were raised in a world afraid to let kids walk to school, brainwashed with ‘stranger danger’ teaching, live in a world of constant terrorism, taught everyone wins that phone/computer screen shields them from a world of fears.
“Till at last the child’s mind is these suggestions, and the sum of the suggestions is the child’s mind. And not the child’s mind only. The adult’s mind tooall his life long. The mind that judges and desires and decidesmade up of these suggestions. But all these suggestions are our suggestions!” The Director almost shouted in his triumph. “Suggestions from the State.” He banged the nearest table. ~~Brave New World
