Washington Post ^

Posted on 08/17/2017 4:57:34 PM PDT by Bull Snipe

The CO, XO and CMC will be relieved of their duties aboard the USS Fitzgerald. In addition, several sailors will face NJP. The actions are a result of the Destroyer's collision with A container ship near the entrance to Tokyo Bay, Japan.

Do they or do they not have 20 years? If not they should be entitled to desk jobs to get hat retirement goal.

NJP = Non Judicial Punishment. U.S. Navy says “The maximum permissible punishments depends on the rank of the accused and that of the officer conducting the hearing. Permissible punishments for officers can include forfeiture of pay (up to ½ of one month’s pay per month for two months), restriction to base or to the ship (up to 60 days), arrest in quarters (up to 30 days), and a reprimand.”

Will the three officers be able to work on OTHER Navy ships? Sounds like it.

We have a friend who is retired Navy. He said this would happen to these folks the day after this happened. Crashing your ship into anything, and you will lose your command, hands down. I’m surprised actually it took this long to be announced.

Thanks. The article is silent on the OOD, JOOD, CICWO and their fates.

No. Their Navy careers are finished either way.

or Chester Nimitz. Ensign Nimitz ran his destroyer USS Decatur aground in Manila Bay. He was court marshaled, found guilty and issued a letter of reprimand.

inevitable. a lot of people were breathlessly jumping on one conspiracy theory after another, but when a us navy warship that is bristling with the state of the art in radar collides with something . . . well, this is going to be the result.

possibly, but I don’t think so. If they were following the orders of the Conning officer, nothing will happen to them.
The could face NJP if the did not follow the orders of the Conning officer and that was found to be a factor in the collision.

But after all this time, still no word on what happened. Inquiring minds want to know....

Was there an orgy going on?

Was EVERYONE asleep?

Did ALL the equipment go down at once?

Did the container ship become very stealthy and ram them?

Was everyone with watch that night on their first day on the job?

Worse case of entitlement than one would see at the local housing project. As many dead bodies as Charlie Manson and the taxpayers owe them a lifetime of income if they haven't earned it yet?

"Benson was trapped in his quarters after the Crystal struck the Fitz’s starboard side, and he was found hanging from the side of the ship, according to a Navy report released Thursday."
