The Norks announcement of a Guam-area nuclear strike might not be a foolish, or even un-reasoned move on their part. Stop and think for a moment, and then game it.
Remember, they did not say "Guam", as in that specific island with multiple US bases. It's been missed in many stories, but the DPRK's NCNA specifically said "near Guam"
For example, this is from the BBC story: "North Korea says it is considering missile strikes NEAR the US Pacific territory of Guam, just hours after President Donald Trump threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury".
More: "The North's official news agency said it was mulling a plan to fire medium-to-long-range rockets AROUND Guam, where US strategic bombers are based."
So the Norks send an old ship into international waters in the middle of nowhere, 1000 +/- miles ENE of Guam. Then they evacuate the crew. Or perhaps they just announce the latitude - longitude of a target in that area.
Kim then launches a nuc-tipped missile toward it, and announces at the launch that the ship or the geographic coordinates are the target. They also announce DPRK has 25 other missiles ready to go. (DIA now admits DPRK may have as many as 60 nuc warheads.)
Bomb goes bang... a big bang. If they miss by 100 miles, who cares? If they aimed for Chicago and hit Milwaukee, that's still a BIG problem. In this case, no one dies with the possible exception of a few lost sailors, which no one will ever know about.
Norks then announce that if any aggressive actions are taken against it, they will launch on provocation. Space Command informs JCS and POTUS that Norks can launch before US missiles can take out launchers, and locations of launchers is generally unknown because Norks are now using TELs.
Our ABMs can be expected to only take out only 50% of the Norks missiles, at the most.
Now what the F do we do?
Again, thinking outside the box, say the Norks launch 3-5 at one time. There is video of them launching 4 within 5 seconds of each other.
?
Guam is a misdirection.
They have no idea of our ability to identify them through satellite, submarine and airborne radars. We can track them like so many UPS packages.
The NORKs have 70 percent of their military within 50 miles of the DMZ. They win or lose based on an overwhelming attack that combines surprise with chaos (with deployment of special forces to the rear of ROK forces and panic by civilians). The ROK military is entirely capable of handling them mano a Mann even if the NORKs had the advantages of surprise and chaos. Supported by our intelligence and selected forces, the balance tilts decidedly in favor of South Korea.
On the other hand, if the US dictated the time and place of the start of the war, the NORKs would have absolutely no chance. Indeed, it is possible their generals would see the handwriting on the wall and not turn on their twerp-in-charge.
North Korea would be lucky to take out a good sized chunk of LA or San Francisco.
They simply do not have the depth of capability for an offensive attack at this time
In a few years that will have changed so we really do need to put a stop to North Korea now before they have ramped up their production and matured their systems
Probably we're going to have to squeeze Kim so hard with the sanctions that his military starts getting hungry, fed up and finally launches a coup against him.
North Korea won’t touch Guam they know that any attack means their destruction..if they will do anything it will be against South Korea
Tell short round that we are going to send him a couple of Hollywood starlets for his harem if he cools down.
Then we send him Lena Dunham and Joy Behar.
I call this “multitasking”.
One great advantage for us, and a big liability for them, is that there is a huge population of people just south of them who look like them, and speak like them, and provide a huge pool of potential spies and saboteurs. Preemptive ‘black ops’ type of attacks, followed by regime changing conventional military takeover is a distinct possibility.
More than 15 years ago, in a classified briefing (now outside the 7-year limit), some of us were briefed on Korea, as we were doing some “consulting.”.
Our forces there were nothing but a tripwire. Even if Norks did not use slime, they were expected to take country in 4 days.
One of the major reasons they did not, was that they would have no idea what do with SK if they conquered it.
So you fire twice. Problem solved.
Wait until I show up with Crunch Berries!
Total remote control control.
Norks can’t see B2s carrying MOP GBU 57s. Norks can’t see Tomahawk filled SSGNs lurking off their coast. Norks prolly can’t see several other big ugly gifts that we have for them.
I say we send Dennis Rodman over with a case of booze, have him liquor up crazy Kim, and then bomb the place into rubble in one gigantic hit. Rodman will go out a hero.
But with Nork TELs, USAF will not know where the targets in Norkland are, and they can move in 20 minutes.
That didn’t seem to be a concern to them in June, 1950 when they invaded SK, and ran roughshod over SK rather quickly, until the SK and US forces stopped them at Pusan.
I agree that the Nork general staff, or at least three brave and ambitious members of it, are the answer.
Rodman, Kim, and Air Koryo? All at once?
The Trifecta!
One of the major reasons they did not, was that they would have no idea what do with SK if they conquered it.
Things have changed over the past 15 years—they likely will now follow the suggestions in post 2, first eating all the SK cereal and then all of the SK children.
The 15-zip UN vote was a huge blow on the diplomatic/economic side. Now let’s make the sanctions hurt by intercepting any ships attempting to elude the sanctions, in international waters, of course.
Send disinformation in the form of forged letters from perceived NK allies such as Iran that will spoil relations between the two countries. This was a common Soviet tactic during the Cold War.
Cripple the two satellites that pass over the USA longitudinally every day. Do it covertly. They need to be blinded, and considering they’re in ideal orbits for an EMP, this needs to be a priority.
Organize an ocean blockade positioned in international waters, hopefully a U.N. action.
Try some unconventional scare tactics — fly a couple of B-2’s over Pyongyang at high altitude, then boast to the world that the Norks can’t do anything about it.
Take covert or clandestine action against their military assets.
Announce Kim’s location on a daily basis — exact coordinates. This would send a message that he’s personally going to be targeted in the event of hostilities.
Broadcast “The Interview” over the air into NK with high-wattage signals around the clock. Also broadcast re-runs of “Girls”.
Target their command & control in the first hit. Figure that oughta degrade their TELs, I doubt that they are able to fire completely independently, doesn’t sound like something Nork control freaks would allow... but I don’t know.
Follow on the heels of the first wave with MOABs for any and all suspected TEL locations, you only need to be close. If the fire doesn’t get them the overpressure will. Missile bodies aren’t real tough.
You want a preemptive strike with no warning. Lull them to sleep if you can. I doubt that TELs always have a motor running.
Damn if this isn’t the best black humor site of the night.
Every inch of DPRK has been mapped. Every underground laboratory or missile factory, every airshaft, every missile pad, every truck carrying them. DPRK has spent a large percentage of its minuscule wealth making these things, so while they have had some success, they have very limited missile and nuclear assets.
In addition, every leadership compound and political leader’s quarters are identified.
Because they are known and relatively few in number, these all could be hit within a span of 5 minutes.
The remainder of DPRK military would need to be dealt with in an indeterminate period. How long that period is determines how much damage Seoul suffers and how long the Kim regime survives.
The final question is China’s response.
