A Tom Lehrer Star Trek music video - Proud to be a Soldier
YouTube ^

For those who enjoy laughing at everything. With all the Desert Storm news videos I've been putting up, this just seemed appropriate.

This one was very popular at Creation Cons back in 1986. Yes, I know the words are anti-war, but I still find it funny when applied to Star Trek. The next one - Space Hero - is another wonderfully funny one.

I am watching an episode now,

The one where Kirk and Spock steal a Romulan cloaking device.

And Star Trek isn’t anti-war? How many times did Captain Picard lower the shields when confronted with a fully armed Romulan warship, all weapons locked? Star Trek TNG should have ended a few episodes into season 1.

Not a huge Leher fan. His Werner Von Braun song had some interesting lyrics. But he was a big lefty.

Kirk with Romulan ears. Classic.

It was still a better show than The Enterprise, though not up to DS9, imo. And I’m perfectly happy to yell at the screen when they do something unbelievably stupid.

For some reason, he hits home with me. I have tried to find a show to put Werner Von Braun to for years and haven’t made it yet. VB was a hero of my childhood. Yes, Lehrer was, indeed, a lefty, but he still makes me laugh. And I loved Bob Dylan, even while disagreeing passionately with him.

I’ve watched every Trek-related show or movie except the Enterprise series. For some reason it didn’t interest me anymore. But in many of the episodes, left-wing idiocy was especially laughable. Like when Picard was able to use liberal persuasion to convince evil aliens not to be evil. What the bad guys really need is just a hug, right?

Scott Bakula lost me with Quantum Leap, and I can’t watch him in anything now. Picard WAS often idiotic, but what would you expect when he had Troi watching everything he said. Give me Quark from DS9 anytime. I’m very fond of the Star Trek remake with Chris Pine. They pulled a very good cast together and I forget very quickly that they aren’t the real thing.

At least Lehrer is a lib with a sense of humor. The album is titled “An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer.”

How about proud to be a red shirt. My day is quickly done and I am home in time for dinner.

A lot of Trekkies would say the JJ version is too great a departure from the original series. After all, JJ himself said he didn't even like Star Trek. He claimed it was too 'sciency' and he couldn't follow it. He's more a Star Wars fan, and said that he tried to make his own Star Trek movie more like Star Wars, which to most Trekkies is a big no-no. Personally I'm a fan of hard sci-fi, which you can only really get in books, not movies or TV. There is already too little science in popular sci-fi, so there's no reason to remove even more.

DS9 was probably my favorite series, however. Quark and Garak being good characters, and Jadzia one of my favorite space babes. It was rather disappointing that she married Worf, however. Even more so when she quit the series to be in that stupid Becker show.

Dylan has vacillated left to right and back again. I love most of Dylan’s work. He explores the human condition better than anyone. His political stuff was mostly early and in his folk period. I liked him better after the folk nuts hated him because he utilized rock musicians.

Like funny parodies. Here is one Weird Al did of Dylan. (In palindrome )

Lehrer was a leftie but soooooo unbelievably smart and funny he is forgiven. Plus he wasn’t like today’s lefties.

Husband and I are both hard-core scifi book addicts. Though I still tend toward the funny.

I didn’t like what JJ did to Star Wars. I LOVED what he did to Star Trek. Agree on Quark, Garak and Jadzea, though I’m beginning to warm to Odo. Loved Garak trying to destroy the founders planet; loved Julian shooting Garak. Just can’t stand Kira or Sisko or Miles. Husband just went bonkers watching Farscape when they carefully made the distinction between hypothesis and theory.

He was well-educated, a quality that seems to be sorely lacking today - even among academia.
