“Imagine 9/11 getting a call that a moose bit someone’s sister and was stuck to her face...”

“Is there any cheese?”

If her hands were free enough to call 911, why didn’t she just go to the kitchen, get a knife, and slice the bastard into steaks?

Most people probably don't have any kitchen knives sharp enough to do much of anything to a large constrictor. If this woman did, she'd have had to take a sharp knife to a writhing mass of muscle wrapped around her neck ending with two fangs buried in her face - cut too shallow and she'd just make the snake madder, cut too deep and she might cut her own throat or face.

Anyway, this woman sounds like a real Darwin award winner. Some people just insist on keeping dangerous, un-tameable animals as pets - at least the only person who got hurt in this case was the owner.

I have had many pet snakes in my life, including two boa constrictors (not at the same time). Moreover, my teenaged daughter has had a ball python for the past twelve years. Sadly, she recently had to find it a new home since she’s heading off to college. (Besides, although their average lifespan in the wild is 10 years, if well cared for in captivity they have been known to live for more than 45 years).

One of the first things I taught my daughter about handling snakes is never to put them near your face. When constrictors are going to strike, they first put their necks in an “S” shape, which gives the means to stretch out in a strike. So you have to keep them at a distance where even when they stretch out their necks, they still can’t reach your face).

I will say that unlike ball pythons, which rarely reach 5’ in length (or maximum of 6’ for females), boas do get big enough to be dangerous (10-12 feet).

This woman clearly got in trouble because she had the bad judgment to let a 5’ constricter wrap around her neck, and get in position where it could bite her face.

Shame on her. I hope she learned her lesson about the proper way to handle constrictors. Rule #1: Never let them get within striking distance of your face.

Snake news, unfortunately the snake doesn’t make it. Sounds like a stupid human. Dang.

RULE 1:No snake is a loving pet.

That's true. As I told my daughter when she was 6 years old, snakes don't love. They're born alone and they live alone.

However, certain species are extremely docile, gentle and slow moving (i.e. ball pythons), and make excellent low-maintenance pets.

Rule 2: Be wary of people who keep snakes.

Funny, when I was looking for female companionship on dating sites, if a woman had a dog, that was a total and immediate deal killer for me. It's not that I dislike dogs, it's just that they're too needy and high-maintenance. The last thing I want to do is be out walking a dog at midnight on the cold, snowy days of New England winters. And they can be really annoying -- although they can also be cute and personable. (I'm talking about the dogs, not the women, although women can be cute and personable too in small doses).

Wheres certain species of snakes are like beautiful plants, but more interactive and fun to watch and handle.

So, to each his (or her) own, I guess.

When I heard the story on TV, the Snake Song was the first thing I thought of. She took in the snake to help if, and then it attacked her. And he said: “You knew I was a snake before you took me in.”

There was a guy in India who has a snake latch onto his privates. He ran into the hospital like that and everyone ran the other direction.
