The Psychology of Bunker Survival
YouTube ^ | 06-23-2015 | Canadian Prepper

A very interesting and sober discussion of a subject too often given short shrift by extreme preppers, i.e. those planning on taking up long term residence in a bunker to ride out a civilization ending SHTF/mass casualty scenario, such as large scale nuclear war.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki are both thriving cities and were just months after their bombs.

Nope. I’ve worked in the field of nuclear warfare for decades. Nuclear warfare isn’t just the use of nuclear weapons but the planning, preparations, and operations regarding the use of nuclear weapons.

“Use Nuke Blast and calculate a 350-400kt nuke where ever you live from NukeMap 3d”

Very cool site, thanks. Interesting to compare the effects of a terrorist nuke at ground level to a much larger ICBM nuke in airblast. Radiation spreads much farther in the former. One thing that they could add is wind direction and speed which would be a factor I’m sure.

Actually, I’m a helluva lot more worried about our soaring crime rate, violence against republicans/Christians/whites, and the next Ice Storm or tornado than I am of a limited or general nuclear war.

What you need to worry about is anything that leads to a loss of electricity.

No electricity, no gasoline. No gas no food. No refrigeration, spoiled food.

NO ELECTRICITY NO WATER.

If it happens from government breakdown, war or crime loss of electricity will mean society failure and mass death in a few days.

After a few days those that survive will be looking to cannibalize anything they can to survive, the survival of the fittest. Political correctness will fly away. Be strong or die.

If I hear of a sudden announcement of a no notice evacuation drill of senior government officials, I’ll make an excuse to leave work right then and there. Btw I agree we better get a new government in a nuke exchange.

weapon storage area. specifically nukes or components that nukes attach to. Major WSAs are the 2 SSBN bases, 3 (6) bomber bases, and HQ of all the missile wings, Pantex Plant, and all NNSA/OST controlled areas such as Lawrence Livermore/Hanford/Y12/Oakridge, etc.

One or two bombs? Who cares? I live in a state that had DOZENS of nukes dropped on it. The rest of the country (to say nothing of the world) did not notice. Hell most of Nevada did not notice. Hell even a massive exchange would leave whole regions barely effected

Back in the 50's I worked in a lab where we monitored background radiation on a daily basis, because of the work we were doing.

Every time there was a Nevada blast the background radiation went up significantly. This was in Iowa. It even happened with the underground detonations.

What you need to worry about is anything that leads to a loss of electricity.

You mean like every ice storm? Every tornado that hits nearby? Like every deer camp trip? Like every duck camp week? Like turkey hunting weekend? Like when we go prairie dog hunting? Like when we go camping?

A country boy can survive.

Lol, I would if I could. I’m not a bunker person, so if I can get blowed up REAL good that’s fine with me.

live near a port city, and between two military bases. Don’t have a bunker, can’t afford it, so...prepared to meet my Maker, and He’s not real happy with me right now.

Quit worrying about a Nuke War along time ago.

I have a theory

From wikipedia

He was born in Selma, Alabama, on December 24, 1946,[1] the son of Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, Jr., and the former Abbie Powe.[2] He was named after his father, who was named after his grandfather, who was named after Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America,[3] and P. G. T. Beauregard, the Confederate general who oversaw the bombardment of Fort Sumter, starting the American Civil War.

So the ultimate redneck Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III had two choices. Support Donald J Trump, the ultimate YANKEE or choose the cushy swamp that he's been living in for 20 years. Hmmm, what's a good ole boy of the grand ole party to do????

I was a kid walking to school in the D.C. area one time when the morning sky looked weird [during sunrise].

This was back before the internet, so it was hard to get a handle on things. An adult told me that the sky looked funny because China had successfully tested a nuclear bomb.

Was that true? Or just some shmuck’s ignorant assumption?

Perhaps a country boy can survive but the not the way you are accustomed.

We aren’t talking about an ice storm or tornado that passes over and things eventually return to normal. We could be talking about the rest of your life without electricity.

No gas? No commercial goods. Once your supplies are gone and you find that everybody had the same idea to go hunting for food and wildlife is scarcer than hens teeth, you will start looking at tree bark soup.

If you have a country boy existence with raising your own crops to feed your animals you better have some family and friends to protect it.

Until Society and law and order is restored your lifestyle will be very difficult. Even a country boy will be severely challenged.

Life however you plan will not be normal. If you store a lot, and I mean a lot, of food and water where it is not obvious you have it and it is easy to protect you might have a chance.

Radiation sickness is not fun and usually means death. If you can get under a concrete slab somewhere in your basement until there is a heavy rain to clear off the most of the radiation from your roof you will need to stay put in that space. After the rain you still won’t want to walk around outside. The wildlife you want to eat will all be dead of radiation sickness if your area was affected by fallout. In the event of no fallout your neighbors will be coming by to see if you can feed them after all the squirrels and rabbits are gone. After a while they won’t take no for an answer and will organize against you.

You will need 24 hour watches, armed guards who you can trust while you sleep.

It could really be nasty and all the making of fun about it aside, it will be ugly.

My choice is 'some shmuck's ignorant assumption'. China is on the other side of the world. No way a nuclear explosion in China could alter the sky in DC.
