The on-going political row over the treatment of Charlie Gard took a new turn today as it emerged US lawmakers have granted the terminally-ill 11-month-old permanent resident status to allow him to fly to America for treatment.

Congress passed the amendment that it is reported could mean Charlie's parents, who have been mired in a battle with British doctors, to take him to the US without needing their permission.

Jeff Fortenberry, Republican U.S. Representative for Nebraska, tweeted:

He’s now an American citizen as far as I’m concerned. Better than those Muzzies rapists and killer cops we’ve had to contend with up until now. The red coats better hand him over or else.

Third issue and most important: who decides for Charlie? The state or Charlie’s parents.

Don’t care so long as NO US TAXPAYER MONEY spent on this kid. Not our problem. AND THIS IS A DISTRACTION FROM REPEALING OBAMACARE, FIXING TAXES, BUILDING THE WALL.

That’s nuts. There are children getting their heads chopped off in Syria and Iraq. Why not give them residency? There are children in China who are used to harvest organs, why not save them and bring them here?

Why this kid? What’s so special about him? Why are we spending our tax revenues on him and his family?

You think? I’ll bet you a million bucks every sick child in sub-Sahara Africa, Asia, and the slums in Mexico is already getting a candidate for US residency because of this stupidity. This is a media created trap for Trump.

Your response is pure nonsense. Are you volunteering to go to Syria and China and rescue all those kids from their tormentors?

Why are you so resentful that this one child with an extremely rare genetic condition might receive help in the US that isn’t available elsewhere?

Idiot! Why would our government even think out rescuing children from other countries? Nor should it, ever!

Why not just give this kid a medical visa. Why is he getting a green card for godsakes!

“Why not just give this kid a medical visa. Why is he getting a green card for godsakes!”

I agree, this entire thing is bizarre——I’m sure there are ill babies all over the world whose families would love to bring them here for treatment, and then stay here.

You make no sense. I never remotely suggested that, but you stupidly made a statement as if the US would grant residency to Syrian or Chinese kids, then their beheaders and organ harvesters might just give them up to be taken to the good old USA. You really need to work on your attempts at analogies to Charlie Gard's situation.

You are really having a conniption fit concerning little Charlie Gard and various attempts to help him. Talk to yourself.

His parents had already raised more than enough money by gofundme to pay for Charlies medical bills. The hospital just let him come here for care.

Yes, my father. My mother and I made the decision after repeated strokes while in the hospital destroyed what he was. And he wanted us to do it at a certain point, which was reached. He wished to join the creator rather than just exist without evening knowing it.

I, also, have seen men die in the theater from wounds. The pain for what was left, alone, was justification. (And humane)

Charlie’s parents, of course. The state, (government), the doctors, no one conceived him, birthed him, fed him, supported him or any type of responsibility other than what they are paid for. And they are not paid to decide what type of care they can provide once they are beyond what they can give. All they can do at that point is recommend, not demand. And the state is not supposed to determine what the use of legal health care is if they already legalized it. So their stopping a possible remedy for the child to extend it’s life if the parents wish, is none of their business if they have no idea other than allow nature to take it’s course. Whether I agree with that decision, is based upon factors we do not know.

“the leading physician and researcher for that condition is in the US”

Key word here: “researcher”. Being able to treat Charlie could result in better treatment both for Charlie and others down the line.

many, many freepers complained when illegals from South America came here, pregnant, knowing that their babies would be affected by the Zika virus, delivered and now, America is on the hook for millions of dollars in medical treatment over the lives of these babies....

why are we not treating our own natural citizens?...instead we have to look to import patients to treat....

don't get it either...

As we spreak, CNN and MSNBC are out looking for an Arab child or Mexican child with the same exact medical problem. Then let’s see who gets a green card to come here for treatment.

My thoughts:

1) If the state pays for your health care and cuts you off, sucks to be you. You just lost your deal with the devil. State don’t and won’t care that there’s an inherent conflict of interest inherent in the system.

2) After having made a few of these decisions, I can’t imagine trying to make one for strangers. If folks can pay their own way, and there are no issues of abuse, neglect, unlicensed and/or unaccredited providers, I’m very much for letting folks take care of their own. I can see no good reason for the UK to keep Charlie when his parents can pay and have qualified providers willing to care for Charlie.

3) Words like “quality of life” get used a lot. Maybe “quality of death” should be, too. If you’ve ever watched someone die a lingering death, you know what I’m talking about. Sometimes the best that can be hoped for is managing the decline in such a way as to minimize suffering. But that avenue is not always the quickest or cheapest.
