Teen Says Tattoo Covering Half His Face Is Making it Hard to Find Work
New York Post ^

Mark Cropp just wants to to get a job and support his family, but something unique is holding him back.

A giant tattoo saying “DEVAST8” covers half of his face, and, perhaps not surprisingly, it’s off-putting for potential employers.

The teenager, born in Oamaru in the southern part of the country, told the New Zealand Herald he had it inked a few months ago, while drunk on homebrew in a jail cell in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Coming soon to a country/city/town/county etc near you

A super fund for TATTOO REMOVAL.

The ‘idiots’ will set it up so people won’t ‘embarrass’ themselves by ‘asking’ for the grant so ANYONE who applies will get some cash.

Of course, it will be demeaning to send someone to check and make sure a tattoo was removed.

Ain’t progress great.

I think there are a boat load of reason this person is finding it hard to get a job, way beyond just the tattoo!

#2 if probably a load of fun at the office. During breaks they play checkers on his face . . . he doesn’t seem to mind. Being in a drug-induced stupor all the time really helps.

Maybe a roommate who pranked him in prison while passed out on homebrew...

On second thought, a couple of nose & ear rings might do the trick.

Perhaps he could learn a “work at home” skill, such as coding or medical transcription.

If I was a CEO I would not hire anyone with visible Tattoo’s!

I hired very few people with visible tattoos. My one standard exception was discrete ink with a military connection. If it's smaller than a half-dollar and covered by long sleeves, I would ignore jump wings, globe-and-anchor, etc.

Duh!! What does this freak of nature expect? Maybe he could have gotten a job in days gone bye when there were traveling freak shows.

He’s not a “freak of nature.” He has chosen, if only when drunk, to make himself into a freak.

What if it said "U.S.S. Indianapolis"?

Not only does the facial tattoo look hideous but the initial reaction by the viewer screams out moron and freak. Most employers don’t want a bizarre sideshow distraction.

“It is shame the young people doing it are so oblivious to how their repulsive looks make it difficult for people put off by them to have to look at their face and deal with them.”

One of the things that startled me in my working career is the number of otherwise smart people who regularly sabotaged their own success. For example, the guy who did fabulous work, but then showed up drunk at an important meeting with the boss. Then, there were pleasant people who would go out of their way to be gratuitously rude to somebody important to their job. These things usually happened on the eve of raises or promotions. Why? It made no sense.
