I actually think this is sad news.
I dislike the NYT’s liberal bias, but I am an admirer of good writing, and in the past the NYT represented the nation’s best writing...as William Safire, Jack Kilpatrick and S.I. Hayakawa stated so many times.
I read The Atlantic, The New Yorker and the NYT for the excellence of their non-political writing, and what we’re seeing is the downfall of one of the great papers of the West, just like the Oregonian, The SF Chronicle, the OC Register and smaller, regional papers like the Seattle PI, the Spokane Spokesman-Review and so many others.
I was raised on newspaper ink, my grandmother was an editor and I read greats like Herb Caen, Charlie McCabe, Stan Delaplane, Dave Barry, Pat McManus, LM Boyd, Jack Kilpatrick-The Writer’s Art, Tom Steenstra, Scott Ostler and even George Will when he wasn’t being a somnambulistic faux conservative.
I just love well-written, well-exposited writing and these background editors represented the best copy editing on the planet.
Buggywhip makers and slide rule manufacturers went under too.
Obsolescence marches on.
