FULL TITLE: 'I wasn't going to let him get away with it': Dramatic moment pregnant woman runs down a fleeing man 'who stole purse from her car' in Walmart parking lot

This is the dramatic moment a pregnant woman mowed down a fleeing man she accused of stealing a purse from her car in a Walmart parking lot.

Christine Braswell, 26, said the man - identified as Robert Raines - was rummaging through her SUV picking her valuables from the vehicle in Asheville, North Carolina.

After she started chasing the man on foot, she quickly realized being five months pregnant she could not keep up the pace, so she got in her car and ran him over in footage captured on camera.

If John Kerry had a son.....

He still could outrun a pregnant woman!

Why should this behavior be discouraged? Unless, of course, you are referring to the theif!

“No matter how feel good this is, and it does feel very good, this type of behavior needs to be discouraged.”

You’re right. She should have shot the bastard.

“So why was she arrested?”

This happened in Asheville...liberal la-la land of the Appalachians.

They are firm believers in “spreading the wealth”. The guy was just assuring himself an equal share.

She didn’t kill the criminal. She used proportionate force to stop a thief.

Would you be against slamming a door on a thief, knocking him to the floor, unconscious, as he tried to run away? It’s the same dang thing.

She should be charged with negligence for failing to permanently incapacitate him when she hit him.

The only way you can support her is finding out who is filing charges/prosecuting her. Then then make damn sure that DA/individual is never re-elected again. If they were appointed, go after the person who appointed them.

We left A_sheville, the gayest city in the world, for New Market Va. Much better here.

Soak the bastard in bacon grease and tie him to a tree festooned with half opened sardine cans.

It needs to be discouraged because the perp was fleeing, her life was not in danger, and the law does not permit one to take revenge on a property crime. She took revenge, plain and simple.

Were the perp trying to attack her and she hit him with her vehicle, I'd be all for it. If she shot him while he was in the process of taking her purse, I'd be all for it. In both cases she is genuinely in fear for her life or serious bodily harm, and would be justified using deadly force. (And hitting someone with a vehicle is using deadly force.)

I am NOT sticking up for the perp, but I am also not going down this slippery slope.

She will be charged with assault, and she will be allowed to plea it down to a misdemeanor, but she will not get off scot-free, nor should she.

Was it revenge, or did she just not want the monetary loss and replacement headache (credit cards, driver’s license, etc.) of having her purse stolen? If her husband had been with her, would he have been allowed to chase down and tackle the thief to get her purse back without being charged with assault or battery?

There are many states in which a property crime (being in your home (property)) allows you to kill that person.

Actually, I believe the article says it is already a misdemeanor.

Agreed, and there is also one state (Texas) with a law on the books allowing one to use deadly force against someone who is "fleeing immediately after committing burglary, robbery, aggravated robbery, or theft during the nighttime" to prevent them "from escaping with the property." But only in Texas, and only during the nighttime.

Running someone down in a parking lot is not in your home, and this did not occur in Texas at night.

Dramatic

Is the DM expanding its headline vocabulary? Usually it's either "shocking" or "hilarious" by random generator. I'd rate this as "hilarious".
