Just more than five months after a robust East Room celebration with President Barack Obama, several Cubs players, coaches and executives had a more modest celebration Wednesday in the West Wing with President Donald Trump.
"This is a great team," Trump told reporters of the 2016 World Series champions as he chatted with the champs in the Roosevelt Room along with the Series trophy. "They were actually here, but they wanted to be here with Trump."
Trump seemed to acknowledge the Cubs were struggling to repeat last year's historic performance.
"Your team's doing OK," he said with a hedge in his voice. "But you're going to do great starting now, right?"
Typically, World Series winners schedule a visit to the White House for a formal celebration during the following season, usually when they are playing either the Nationals or nearby Orioles.
But Obama, whose political career began on the South Side of Chicago and whose wife grew up a fan of the North Siders, was eager to bring the team in early, and many of his staff from Chicago were keen to make it happen. They came just days before Obama left office, with team President Theo Epstein offering the White Sox fan a "midnight pardon" among other memorabilia.
The Cubs have done a second round of celebrating while in the nation's capital for a four-game series with the Nationals. The championship trophy was hosted at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday and Chairman Tom Ricketts brought members of his squad to the White House on Wednesday.
Trump noted that he had tried to bring Tom's brother, Todd Ricketts, into his administration as deputy Commerce Secretary.

Wrong, check again. Appropriate races in attendance and all with a wealth of smiles.
The fact that they showed up when the NFL and NBA had problems proves that the average baseball player is smarter than the average football or basketball player. I’m encouraging my grandson, who is very good in all three, to give up the latter. Its a lot of work to end up injured and dumb.
In the first picture, look at the guy in the plaid shirt to the right of the ‘45’ sign. There is another picture of this guy giving the finger and smiling. I didn’t go the the source of this article, but hopefully the Trib decided to forego the political classlessness. You’re right, some guy ARE raised right and some aren’t.

And there does not appear to be even one Icelandic player or even a Mongolian player. Nor is there even one Left Handed Lesbian player of color.
Is that picture real? I’ve never seen a ball thrown like that except in a pre-school.

If I ever had the opportunity for a photo-op in the Oval Office with the president, you better believe I’ll show up in my best suit and tie. When my grandchildren see that photo years from now, I want to look like I belong there. Not like some ragamuffin pulled out of a pool hall.

If you watch a Yankees game they sing “God Bless America” at the seventh inning stretch, instead of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Also, they honor people who have served in the military. They are on the field and are introduced by name and service, and the cameras show them to all.
