Record-breaking sniper kills ISIS terrorist with two-mile shot

A hero sniper took out an ISIS fanatic with an incredible 11,300-foot shot — which is more than 2 miles — the longest confirmed kill ever.

A member of Canada’s Joint Task Force 2 killed the insurgent with a McMillan TAC-50 sniper rifle during an operation last month in Iraq.

Sources wouldn’t reveal the names of the elite sniper and his spotter or the exact location where the shooting took place for operational reasons.

A military source told the Globe and Mail: “The shot in question actually disrupted a Daesh [Islamic State] attack on Iraqi security forces.”

“Instead of dropping a bomb that could potentially kill civilians in the area, it is a very precise application of force and because it was so far way, the bad guys didn’t have a clue what was happening.”

The source stressed the operation fell within the strictures of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government’s advise-and-assist mission.

The shot took just under 10 seconds to hit the target and was fired from a high-rise location during an operation within the past four weeks.

The kill was independently verified by a video camera and other data, according to the Canadian press.

This ones interesting read and was not included......

Last month, a British SAS sniper is said to have shot dead an ISIS jihadi from 7,920 feet (1.50 miles) away using the world’s most powerful rifle......The kill was unconfirmed by the military so is not included in the league table.

It took three whole seconds for the bullet to reach its target - the throat of an Islamic State terrorist in the Iraqi city of Mosul........The British marksman was using a CheyTac M200 Intervention gun which is produced in South Carolina and retails at $13,800 (£10,500) and can vaporise a person’s organs from 8,200 feet.

As the terrorist was leaving a burned-out building two weeks ago, the SAS gunman is said to have pulled the trigger, registering “one of the most difficult kills in the regiment’s history.”

Yeah, that image really puts that shot in perspective.

The other amazing thing about that shot is the bullet drop compensation is almost 600 ft for that distance (as compared to a level shot at 100 yards). Hard to imagine the precision and skill to loft an unguided projectile and have it free fall a few hundred feet as part of the 2 mile trajectory and still hit within about 10” of center of mass, which is the most you could probably get away with and still have a kill.

Actually you have to compensate for coriolis, the rotation of the earth!

Interesting! Is the compensation different if you're firing north/south vs. east/west or some degree in between? I intuitively think yes, but I'd never heard this before your post.

If you have a good hand load formula (powder type, load, bullet type) to recommend, I will take it. :)

Thanks for the reply.

I don’t have anything over .308 at the present, but have thought about trying some long-range shooting some day. We are fortunate to have a range that goes out to 800 yards nearby. At least for now. The locals have been trying to close it down for years.

There was a guy with a Barrett out there one day doing 50BMG from prone. I had to put my hearing protection on before I got out of the car! Wow, that thing packed a punch. He was hitting a metal gong consistently out at 600 yards. Looked like fun. Every time he fired a circle of dirt around him leapt up in the air. Impressive!

“the bad guys didn’t have a clue what was happening.”

Probably just scattered like roaches.

I keep telling my wife, the next time I have money for a new car, I am going to buy a Barrett...

Wow, 11,300ft is phenominal.
Beats my best shot. Last summer I nailed a moving water moccasin through the head at 40 yards, a little after midnight using flashlight illumination.

Even with the best optics, how do you see a prairie dog at 3100 yards, let alone hit it?

Yup! I shoot Ultra Long Range so I know a little. Latitude plays a role, the closer to the equator the more effect on the bullet. Basically, the earth spins fastest there and there is a higher amount of centrifugal force. The biggest correction you need to make our win shooting east or west. When shooting north or south you’re making a change to your azimuth as opposed to elevation. Bullets shot to the east fly higher and bullets fired to the west shoot low. When shooting to the north bullets fly to the right and to the south bullets fly to the left. You really don’t need to start making corrections and to start pushing back beyond about 1000 yards.

Did the sniper take some shots to get his ranging? Seems that he would have had to take one or two. If not, that was the most phenomenal single shot kill ever.

Does it count if he was firing into a group and happened to hit a target, but not necessarily the specific person that he was aiming at initially?

I think I read in the article it was confirmed with independent video. I would think that means it was NOT a random hit.

Billy Dixon at the Battle of Adobe Walls, June 27, 1874, using a .50-90 Sharps killed an Indian at 1538 yds.
Nice shooting in those days with the equipment available.
Also no scope just an iron peep sight!
