Average teens as sedentary as 60-year-olds, study finds

Here's some compelling evidence that Americans have become a sedentary bunch: Research suggests that the average teen is no more active than the average 60-year-old.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 12,500 people of various ages who wore activity tracking devices for seven straight days as part of national health surveys conducted between 2003 and 2006.

The study found that physical activity levels among children and teens were lower than previously thought. The World Health Organization recommends at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a day for children ages 5 to 17.

But in the study, more than 25 percent of boys and 50 percent of girls aged 6 to 11 and more than 50 percent of males and 75 percent of females aged 12 to 19 did not reach the WHO guidelines, according to the researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore.

"Activity levels at the end of adolescence were alarmingly low, and by age 19, they were comparable to 60-year-olds," senior study author Vadim Zipunnikov said in a Hopkins news release.

I’m 63. Based on this study, it sounds like I’m less sedentary than average teens.

How about FIVE hours a day like we used to do playing stick ball or street hockey or baseball or when we were younger cops and robbers or walking all over to get things for my aunt at the stores.

God it was great to be young!

On the plus side I can say I’m as active as a teenager :)

Play till the street lights come on....then get your butt home.

Seems everyone had the same rule. Big City living!

Wish they'd design subdivisions with a basketball court and baseball diamond. Cheap and lasts forever....Enough with the Forever Wild...

Yeah, but you didn't have to eat Michelle Obama lunches when you were a kid. Today's kids are probably too weak to do anything active after school lets out.

national health surveys conducted between 2003 and 2006.

Ten year old data from before the proliferation of smart phones.

I’ve always been active, and I’m 60. I lift 3 days a week and run about five miles a week. I can still play basketball, etc.

There is still one thing I can’t do like I did when I was in my 20’s, however.

One of my relatives teaches college. He holds office meetings with his students to get updates on their progress. He says smart phones have crippled the kids’ ability to hold even a basic conversation. When asked a question — “how is your paper coming along?” — many will look down at their phones in an effort to find the correct answer.

There’s a little blue pill you can take for that.

Ya know.

These kids are glued to their phones and video game consoles. When I was a kid I was active all day. If I wanted to anywhere I took my bike. If I wanted to participate in after school activities I pedaled 15 miles to school and 15 miles home. Parents today would be arrested for cruelty if they allowed their kid to do that.

Same rule! Exactly :)

GREAT days!

It would be good to have fields.

People are afraid to let their kids out to play today.

But we had the same issues.

One time an old guy offered my little cousin Danielle candy through the window of his car.

There was five of us punching his car and trying to grab on as he sped away. Sick ####.

In the summer, my 16 year old son goes to the conditioning gym 5x per week for 60-90 minutes (and comes home soaked in sweat), has travel baseball practice 2x/week, and goes to strength and conditioning practice at the high school for fall football workouts 4 nights per week.

My 12 year old son has to be frog marched to the treadmill to get some form of exercise 3x/week and complains mightily the entire time.

I know that my 12 year old is the norm, and my 16 year old is the oddball in this regard.

Check out TRT. Then, you can lift 5 days a week and you’ll make your 20 year old self look like a piker. (If the wife can keep up...lol)

Same with us. Mother's would freak out today if their kids were gone all day and they didn't know exactly where they were. Different world.
