I was reading an article a while back that pointed out that the differences between the generations from 1969 and 1999 were not that great - music festivals like Woodstock were similar in 1999, the kids looked much the same, indulged in the same illicit substances and sexual conduct, believed in the same Socialist nonsense, etc.

The societal earthquake happened between 1939 and 1969, where there is hardly one single thing in common between the generations. Compare a music festival in 1939 to Woodstock. Imagine the types of young people who would attend.

Republicans - who as a party still represent many of the views of 1939 youth - could never understand how a Bill Clinton or Barack Obama could be elected. Democrats - who as a party firmly represent the views of 1969 youth - cannot understand how Donald Trump got elected, and are trying very hard to pretend it is reversible.

But there are many Americans who don't identify with either previous generation, and therefore dislike the platforms of both parties. Trump managed to speak to them - but it seems neither party understands yet that their core platforms are out of date.

Post 36 - I agree with your statement, “Neither party understands that their core platforms are out of date.” May I add here, it’s very hurtful for a core supporter of a party to read the current budget plan of that party and see it plans to hurt them worse than the Democrat plan had been doing. Not very smart of the Republican party.

I dunno about that. There were “festivals” even in the 1920s. No “feature movie” and “soundtrack album” though. Saw an ad for one on the back of “Flapper” magazine from the 1920s encouraging drivers and picnickers to come in from out of state for a weekend event. That periodical allegedly had a circulation of 100,000 in its day.

And the 1930s had plenty of socialists/Communists congregating.

I’m reading a paperback by Greil Marcus on Bob Dylan’s basement tapes and he writes of the Communists/Socialists talking points behind the folk music movement. That stretches from the 1930s activism through the 1960s.
