Our son had a friend in theater years ago who was an amazing performer. She received the offer to be in the chorus in Les Miserables - on tour. Great gig for a newbie. She had to turn it down because she was not allowed to opt out of the prostitute scene. I need to see what she’s up to now.
Courageous stand.
I think your friend’s is a different type of story altogether. The play is a whole, prostitutes and all. What was she doing performing in it if she had a problem with the depiction of prostitution?
I was in a large city choir back in the ‘80s. I dropped out because one of the concert pieces was “Ave Maria” and singing it was mandatory. I didn’t make a big stink about it - - just dropped out.
For this athlete, though, her career and income are at stake. She might have a case for a lawsuit. My participation was strictly volunteer. Most of us make principle-based choices in life.
My career did suffer when I refused to attend a “commitment” ceremony (wedding) for two lesbians in our organization. My boss, the HR Director, told us we had to attend. No way. I didn’t get written up or anything but I was treated differently - and not in a good way - from then on. I took early retirement because it was so bad.
