The jersey design -- especially for national teams that don't generate a lot of their own revenue -- is often dictated by major sponsors. When a major sponsor gives a boatload of money to the national team, they'll often negotiate control over the jersey design and content into the agreement.

Personally, I think anyone who values their Christian faith would do well to shed any national identity here in the U.S. of any kind -- in terms of recognizing national sports teams or even the moral legitimacy of their own government.
