I read some time ago that more people in the U.S. are bitten by copperheads than all other snakes combined. I am pretty sure that North Carolina has the most venomous snake bites but not the most deaths.
I haven’t seen the figures but I would bet more die from rattlers than any other snake bites, at least here in the U.S.
My buddy Colt stepped on one.
3 days in ER
In this case and in the case of the rattlesnake bite Intravenous Vitamin C would have resolved these favorably. And without all the aftereffects.
Snake bite is a very expensive medical emergency. Each unit of anti-venom costs anywhere between $2,500 and $36,000, depending on the hospital and its location. A typical snake bite victim needs multiple units of anti-venom, along with antibiotics, surgery (to remove dead tissue), hospitalization and physical therapy, along with other treatment.
If you plan to be in the woods—or other locations where poisonous snakes are found—snake pants and boots are a very good investment.
Hope your sister has fully recovered.
I almost stepped on a copperhead several years ago. Had a coral snake crawl across the path in front of me a couple of months ago. The bad news about coral snakes is that their bites are so rare that antivenom is very rare. Basically if you get bit by one, they make sure you don’t go into resperatory failure until you get over the bite.
If it was dark, how would she know it was a copperhead and not some other snake? Did she see it bite her?
Your post scared me.
There’s one section in my garden where there are snakes. I took a photo and noticed that there are three different kinds. I haven’t identified them yet but they sure looked fat.
I’ll be wearing cowboy boots from now on.
