SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea launched a ballistic missile on Monday that flew 280 miles and appears to have landed inside Japan’s economic zone where fishing and cargo ships are active, the South Korean military and the Japanese government said.

President Moon Jae-in of South Korea called a meeting of his top security officials for later Monday morning to discuss the missile launch, coming a week after the North last tested a ballistic missile, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan condemned the launch as a provocation.

They’re launching almost weekly, and we haven’t seen a much needed response.

As of now they have successful ICBMs that can be loaded with nuclear warheads. Those can reach anywhere in Japan and South Korea.

Would it be safe to say Japan now has functional nuclear weapons?

The US is obviously not going to do anything but posture.

As NK has crossed dozens of red lines.

I know the risks of war are huge & terrible - and have a daughter in S. Korea - but Trump ought to shoot down the next ballistic missile aimed for Japan that would land in Japanese waters.......after I get my daughter back here of course......

Japan does not have any functioning nukes. But I have it on fairly good authority they could in about half a day. Namely, they just have to put already built pieces A, B, and C together.

Japan’s nukes (that technically don’t exist) are thermonuclear. Just one would wipe out most of North Korea’s main infrastructure.

Japan also of course has delivery systems (again, for those nukes that technically don’t exist).

The Norks really don’t want this fight. It would be a VERY short one.

“Would it be safe to say Japan now has functional nuclear weapons?”

I live in Japan , a couple of prefectures west of where the missile landed , near Shimane .

I can’t answer your question , however if I were to guess I would say no , Japan does not have functional nuclear weapons . It’s going to be up to the US if it comes to a nuclear strike , which Japan would no doubt finance . MHO .

Here’s the response: the ROK people threw out the conservative President and hired a liberal. Some people never learn. Let’s hope their appeasement doesn’t lead to open war.

We blew one up a few weeks ago on launch (not generally reported but it just happened to explode as launched — gee wonder why?) Wonder why we didn’t blow this one up, too.

let the South Koreans and Japanese address their defense.

if they think the Norks are a threat, let them get excited and do something

otherwise yawn

Japan could have them within a few hours if they wanted. They have all the parts, hasn’t that been leaked?

I see no reason why they wouldn’t have built a few with NK able to drop the bomb.

Problem is that South Korea is an ally, and we are technically in a state of war with North Korea.

We could settle the ENTIRE issue in 20 minutes. We end up being the bad guy. Trump won’t be the chump. Make sure EVERYONE is on board. We could always withdraw our 28k troops.

...”I have a feeling CHINA will take care of them”....

I agree....Kim repeatedly doing this is just putting more pressure on China.....they either act soon or China will be paying a price they don’t want to pay either..and they know it.

We can’t do a whole lot unless we have S. Korea’s permission as agreed on.....the idea remains to get China to act.

It’s more complicated then just acting though. You know that.

There are literally “millions” that’s six zeroes....25,000,000(second largest metropolis in the world) people in Seoul that will almost certainly be attacked by conventional bombs, possibly chemical weapons, and maybe nuclear in the event of a pre-emptive attack on North Korea.

If however we do not pre-emptively attack North Korea, there is a CHANCE and not a certainty that North Korea directly or indirectly detonates a nuclear weapon in a metropolis somewhere in the western world. Doing that would certainly turn Pyongyang at minimum into ash.

I have a suspicion that despite all his bluster and bark Kim is not stupid enough to preempt with a nuclear strike.

You can still see remnants from the bombs that struck Seoul’s train station there.
