True story. There was an old convict who’d spent most of his life in jail. One day, he was released and he went directly to a jewelry store, threw a rock through the window, grabbed handfuls of jewelry and sat down on the curb with his stolen goods to wait for the cops. When asked why he did it, he said he wanted to go back to jail where he was taken care of and he didn’t have to get a job.

One of my father's brothers-in-law had a relative who went from juvenile delinquent, to petty thief, to serial convict; I grew up hearing about the guy from time to time, as my dad would occasionally run into him between incarcerations.

When this gent was in his late 50's, he told my dad that he was probably going to steal something and get caught so he could get back to prison- he had gotten used to it and trying to make an honest living was not working out well.
