His death comes just two months after the Allman Brothers Band co-founder cancelled all tour dates for the year.
He 'passed away peacefully' at his home in Savannah, Georgia on Saturday, according to a statement on the singer's website.
The father-of-five was married five times, including to the singer Cher - the father of his son Elijah Blue Allman.

RIP Greg....
Not a big fan of his music, but enjoyed some of it.
Godspeed.
Eat a peach
Wow. One of the greats.
Saw the Allman Bros band in the New Orleans Superdome in August of 1975. First weekend events were ever held there. Crowd of 100,000 (Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels and others also played.)
Too bad it wasn’t Cher.
RIP
Fantastic, fantastic group of musicians, who endured more than their fair share of tragedy.
Hope he has been welcomed home by Skydog, Berry and Butch.
RIP.
Although I liked a lot of their stuff, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the original Allman Bros. But loved his solo work. Whot a life and times, tho’. There for it all and in the midst of a lot. I hope it went well for him. d:^)
RIP Gregg
One of my favorites tunes that got little airplay

I met Greg when we were staying on Santa Monica Blvd when my band was playing LA (76). I was outside near the Coke machine when a green Vette came screaming up. He got out, long blonde hair, and was so wasted he couldn’t put a quarter in the pop machine.
I said “ Let me help you,” got him a soda. He said, “Aw thanks, man” ... then went upstairs to meet CSNY drummer Dallas Taylor. I was told they were doing heroin, but didn’t check & never saw him again until the next month The Allman Bros were playing Cincy & they got us back stage passes.
He’s no Angel but he better be one now.
Cher is dead.
It's just hard to tell with all the work she's had done.
For all the hype about Woodstock in 1969, the Allman Brothers were one of three bands (along with The Band and the Grateful Dead) at an even bigger event four years later. The Summer Jam at Watkins Glen in 1973 attracted what is still considered the largest crowd ever at a music festival, with an estimated 600,000 fans on hand for the one-day event.
Never got the chance to see him live, heard his live shows were pretty free wheeling.
Worst decision of his life: marrying Cher.
One of the best decisions: dumping Cher.
Anyway, look up Duane and y’all eat a peach for peace.
Butch Trucks and now Greg Allman.
Gregg Allman Ain't Wasting Time No More. Chris Cornell, of the Soundgarden band, will no longer be having Black Days here on Earth.
That guy from the J. Geils Band saw his last Centerfold. That dude who drummed for that band that I can't remember will no longer be playing cowbell on that one song that played on the radio a lot. That girl from Sister Sledge, dead, dead, dead. Chuck Berry had a Particular Place to Go and it's not here.
Then that guy who played in Asia is dead and the guy from April Wine too. Those were two good 1980s rock bands and now they are dead.
Gerry Rafferty is dead. Johnny Cash too. Most of the Bee Gees and Andy Gibb too. Half the Beatles are dead but Paul lives on. McFadden & Whitehead are both dead and dead. Guess there was Stopping Them after all.
The list of carnage goes on and on. Laura Branigan, Teena Marie and Juice Newton, all gone. George Michael, Greg Lake and Bob Welch are all dead too.
Bobby Vee, Prince and David Bowie. All three are dead.
I can go on and on for hundreds and hundreds of more names but the bottom line is that soon all the musicians will be dead and we shall have nothing to listen to but talk radio.
Whipping Post for the first time? Blew Me Away.
RIP Gregg

The older you get the more your contemporaries die.
Sad,but true.
