The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's' Turns 50: Is It The Best Album Ever?
Billboard Magazine ^ | 05/26/2017 | William Goodman

The Best Album of All Time. That’s one hell of a claim.

Even if The Beatles’ eighth studio album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band -- released 50 years ago, May 26, 1967, in the U.K. -- is the musically ground-breaking, hyper influential career high-water mark from The Best Band of All Time, those can still sound like fighting words. But there’s no hyperbole here. There’s widespread consensus: Sgt. Pepper’s has topped its fair share of Greatest Albums of All Time lists

I was also going to say it’s not even the best album from 1967 and was going to say Oddessey and Oracle by the Zombies (minus that awful dirge “A Butcher’s Tale”.

However, that was recorded in ‘67, but not released until ‘68.

And I’m a huge Beatles fan. US Version of Rubber Soul and Abbey Road are my favorites. Probably listened to the White Album the most of all of them over time. And Please Please Me for some reason gets a lot of play for me, too.

A great album...no doubt. But not the best ever. It's not even the best by the Beatles.Rubber Soul and Revolver were their best (I,for one, can't pick one over the other).

1967 was a banner year for music that had far greater impact on music for times to come. The Beatles were already has-beens by that time. The album was a pop record at best.

One Beatles album me and my older brother wore out (8-track) was the "Hey Jude" album.

Fidelio is awful. Too bad LvB never figured out how to write for the human voice...

I see music isn't your strong suit.

No. Revolver was better.

Any of the first three Chicago albums were better.

Dynamo Hum was better.

Hotel California was better, at least "in it's style", as some say.

The Bollocks was better too.

So no, it wasn't the greatest album ever, not even close.

IMO Revolver and The White Album were the two best offerings from The Beatles, and Sergeant Pepper gets honorable mention maybe.

To tell the truth, any album that doesn't have Beethoven's ninth symphony or Handel's Messiah on it ain't gonna be the greatest album ever.

But that's JMHO. They axed, right?

Any of the first three Chicago albums were better.

Chicago V was their best. No filler, as on the double-albums, incredible playing by Terry Kath. "Dialogue", "Saturday in the Park", "A Hit By Varese".

Yeah, true dat, the fifth album was good too. Too bad the private drama played out in the ways (plural intended) it did in the times after that.

Dark Side of the Moon

From wikipedia:

The album was an immediate commercial and critical success; it topped the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart for a week and remained in the chart for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988.

I don't know if that actually qualified as a Beatles album as it was a compilation of songs from over the years.

The harmonies that Lamm, Cetera and Kath could produce rivaled the Beach Boys IMHO, which is probably a reason they toured together, and collaborated on “Wishing You Were Here”.

Obviously, since it's used just about in every commercial and TV show intro these days.

Pete Townshend never hid - even in the 60s - that he wanted to get paid for performing, unlike a lot of the so-called (and often, phony) "share the wealth" types of the era.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’m not upset about it.

Although I was a bit discouraged when I read in Pete’s autobio that he considered himself a “socialist”.

But at least Roger was for Brexit, big time.

I am a huge, huge Beatles fan, but I’ve never liked the White Album...they weren’t really singing as a united band on that one. I love Pepper, and yes, it was innovative. I like Rubber Soul, and I have a special love for the songs from Help!
