It absolutely is NOT the best album ever.
It’s not even the best Beatles album.
The best Beatles album, AND the best album ever is Revolver.
Both Electric Ladyland and Band of Gypsys were far better.
“Paranoid by Black Sabbath”
Certainly in the top 5 rock albums.
Under appreciated to this day.
Their swansong “Abbey Road” was their best, and the best album ever. They wanted to go out with a flourish, and they did. They wanted to go out on top and they did. Every album from Revolver to Abbey Road was a masterpiece, but Abbey Road has always been my personal favorite. If I had a buck for every time I’ve listened to it, I am sure I’d be $5000 richer.
Rain falls down the side of my face, must be a rainy day.
I do think The Beatles broke up at precisely the right time, they had nowhere to go but down from there, and judging from the solo output from the 70s, it wouldn’t have been good.
Electric Ladyland I liked a lot. Band of Gypsies? Didn’t like it. I felt the freshness and excitement were gone. Experience was a shot out of the blue! A friend worked at the big record store in Milwaukee and they got an advance copy,,, and they all hated it! My friend brought it to me cuz he knew I liked electronic music and Jeff Beck’s wildness and the Kinks unsuppressed R&R violence. I went nutz! “You mean we’re allowed to do this?” Changed my guitar-playing life! But I play pedal steel now.
It was a very clever album, but contained nothing that I still want to listen to. Furthermore, it launched rock music into an era of pretentiousness that took years to recover from.
I thought The Doors “L.A Woman” was one of the best ever.
More than any particular album, I miss the early days when rock first moved onto the FM dial. I can remember DJs playing anything that came to mind, stuff you’d never hear anywhere else. I remember them playing whole albums... I remember one guy played the whole album and at the end of it said, “Wow. Lets hear that again...” and played the whole thing again.
It didn’t take long, though, for the big companies to take over the FM dial and once they came in with playlists, it was over.
There isn’t anywhere really you can go for that, now.
On the other hand, we have Pandora and you tube. So I guess it all works out.
My favorite LP from 1967 was “Pieces Aquarius Capricorn and Jones, LTD.”
Sorry Billboard. Loved the Monkees and they beat the Beatles on the charts, too.
“...The Twelve Dreams of Dr.Sardonicus by Spirit.”
A very excellent and underappreciated record, in my opinion.
I haven’t listened to the Beatles since the late ‘60s. I can’t stand their music today.
IMHO,Tommy(The Who) and The Wall(Pink Floyd) were better.
As a Who-fan, I never really got into Tommy as a studio album. The live versions of the songs from Tommy were much better, the studio-version seems so subdued for a Who album.
Led Zeppelin 1. Still sounds great 49 years later. Acoustic folk and atomic blues.
Their live version of Amazing Journey/Sparks blows just about everything else out of the water. Looking forward to seeing them for the 6th time in July.
Fired Led Zeppelin I up on the way home from work today. USB sticks and car audio are a match made in heaven!
