Corpus Christi Republican Congressman Blake Farenthold considers the source behind the 2016 hack of the Democratic National Committee's email server an unanswered question and believes a federal investigation is warranted.
Speaking on CNN Wednesday, the fourth-term congressman refuted a widely believed conclusion that the Russian government interfered with the U.S. presidential election to aid President Donald Trump's campaign and instead indicated a conspiracy theory about a slain Democratic National Committee staffer could be true.
"My fear is our constant focusing on the Russians is deflecting away for some other things that we need to be investigating," Farenthold said on the network. "There’s still some question as to whether the intrusion of the DNC server was an insider job or whether or not it was the Russians."
Later Wednesday, Farenthold elaborated on his opinion of how the investigation should be handled in a phone interview with the Caller-Times. The death should be investigated in the same manner Russian interference has been reviewed, he said.
"That should be a part of the ongoing investigation into alleged Russian interference in the election, because that’s an alternative theory that deserves being looked at," Farenthold said.
The "insider job" theory centers on the July murder of Seth Rich, who worked for the Democratic National Committee and was shot in the back.

What did he say to the cops, he was still alive when they found him.
What does the autopsy report say, were his wounds fatal or did he die en route to hospital

I think you question is what identifies him as the leaker, yes? There is evidence other than his murder, that associates him with Wikileaks. he leaked before he was murdered, that evidence has to exist.
The way you are viewing the case, if Rich's murder was in fact a random act of violence, then he couldn't have been the leaker. I find that to be logically nonsense.

No, not at all. I'd just don't think the fact that he was murdered is any indication that he was the leaker.
I agree with that. Maybe the leak and murder are linked, maybe they aren't. That's what I said in the first place.
As far as evidence of both events (leaking and the murder), I wasn't asserting I could marshal it, or even that it would ever see the light of day, only that it exists. The way the press and DEMs are framing the issue, if the Rich murder isn't linked to the leak, then Rich didn't leak. IOW, if you can't prove Rich was murdered for leaking, then he isn't the leaker.
If Rich was murdered for leaking, there is more than one way to get to "Rich was the leaker." One is to solve the murder including establishing the motive, the other is to find evidence created when he leaked, before he was murdered. If Rich was the leaker, some evidence of that was created before he was murdered.
They get enough “I’ll never be a USAA customer thank you” will change their minds right back.
