It has been called the memorial that nobody wanted except the Vietnam vets. Apparently the author is too young or stupid (probably both) to recall that the 'Nam vets wanted a memorial, but didn't want the "gash." It was a huge issue for a long time.

True. The addition of the statue and the flag transformed it. As I remember, the artist who designed the memorial, Maya Lin, objected to the 3 soldiers statue
- but tough cookies, it's ours.
