Teacher on Leave After Snapchat Rant About Prom Overspending

Between the dresses and tuxedos, the tickets, and the ride, it’s easy to spend a lot of money on prom. One teacher who noticed that people were splurging on prom as opposed to, say, school supplies, expressed her opinion about it publicly — and is now being punished.

On May 12, Caitlin Cormack, a middle school teacher in Bedford, Ohio, took to Snapchat to express her frustration with students and parents choosing to overspend on prom but not on school supplies or a tutor. “These damn kids and parents … not enough money for school supplies or passing grades but out here renting horses,” Cormack wrote over a selfie. In the photo, she looked frustrated.

According to News 5 Cleveland, a parent confirmed that “renting horses” refers to the horse-drawn carriages that took some students to prom Friday night. It appears a few parents follow Cormack and complained about the post. Now she’s been put on administrative leave.

The school’s superintendent, Andrea Celico, told News 5 Cleveland that “the incident is under investigation” and that she was “disappointed in what has happened.”

Celico added that Cormack “is very saddened by this, and it’s certainly a hard lesson to learn for everyone.”

So what’s the big deal? “I think it’s very disrespectful to the parents,” John Bouldin, the parent of a senior at Bedford High School, told News 5. “We do pay taxes in this city, so that teachers can make a nice salary to do their jobs, not to comment about our kids.”

I think proms will go by the wayside. Years ago, it was a way to have a more formal gathering for young people.

“These damn kids and parents...

I think that is what gave them the excuse they need.

Never drink while on social media...

“We do pay taxes in this city, so that teachers can make a nice salary to do their jobs, not to comment about our kids.”

The guy who said that is too stupid to understand what the teacher is saying which is there is a complete disconnect between rational and irrational celebration about a high school diploma. Frankly, while not a big fan of government schools, I agree with the teacher.

Thou shalt not have an opinion - unless it is OURS!

Fired for telling the truth. The same can be said for quinceras and weddings.

I see what you mean in one way. The rich used to and perhaps still do have expensive Debutante Balls for their young ladies. I don’t know what the equivalent was for boys, but I’m sure it existed. Now, more that just the upper class can gain access to good jobs, depending on education, presentation, connections and plain old luck.

The proms may continue their popularity primarily because they are often seen as a rite of passage from childhood into adulthood. Almost every teen wants to get older, both girls and boys. With more families being unchurched, there are fewer rites of passage available to kids nowadays that can be recognized as such. For others, getting their own car was and continues to be the point of arriving as an almost adult.

When will teachers learn to STFU?

My son's teacher surely did not like my response to her emai, telling me he was caught playing a game on his school issued tablet.

I told her I would counsel my son to cease that activity; however, what did she think was going to happen when they opted to eliminate textbooks in favor of tablets?

She made a mistake saying all that on Social Media. Should have thought who else might be reading it.
Why not just write in in a diary?

Proms are ‘coming out’ parties for young people now, in the tradition of cotillions. They’ve gone WAY PAST cotillion dances with punch and cookies, though.

What's a shame is that there was some need to report her for expressing an opinion. Even back when proms cost mere hundreds of dollars when everything was added up, just about every school I've worked at handled it poorly. You can't stop parents from being jerks or daddies from wanting their little girl to be the prettiest most special young lady. What schools could do is promote an alternative for expensive prom decisions, like instead take up a collection to spend "prom savings" on something useful like a dinner for homeless veterans or some such charity.

Keep in mind that very often it's the same parents who fund these obscene choices that will complain that they can't afford to pay for their young 'uns college educations.

What if she was dead sober and just happens to be right?

Proms have become ridiculous. Celebrations of trannyism and faggotry.

Hmmm...
A lot of stupid in this one
Where to start

Cussing at Kids, from an authority figure, in public, Bad
Kids making poor decisions, Bad but expected
Parents not supervising the use of resources of the kids, Bad
Supervisor publicly punishing Teacher who is trying to teach a life lesson, Bad

The “Damn” was over the top and probably the excuse they used to put her on leave.

She probably is right. It’s the way she said it. That is why I assume she was not sober.

These are the same parents/kids who will be shocked that the burger-flipping jobs the basket-weaving degrees get them won’t pay off their six-figure student loans.

Whew!
