A professional hunter was killed when an elephant that had just been shot fell on top of him, according to reports.

South African big-game bagger Theunis Botha, 51, was leading a hunt in Zimbabwe on Friday when his group accidentally walked into the path of a herd of breeding elephants near Hwange National Park and three of the elephant cows charged at them, the Telegraph reports.

Botha fired at the rampaging pack but was caught by surprise when a fourth cow came in from the side and picked him up with her trunk.

A conservation agent once shot a big male lion as it charged him in a full run. The agent had tine for one shot that absolutely positively HAD to count! The animal leaped claws out...and fell dead right on top of him. Watcha’ call a damn near thing.

I really can’t believe the clueless responses on freerepublic. you’d figure this was some tree-hugger site. Talking about karma that this man was killed. We should just get our meat humanely, like at a supermarket. This guy has likely over the years made it possible for thousands of animals to flourish in his area because of money injected into that local economy. Likewise fed locals and paid them more than any other job. Visit any other African country that doesn’t encourage big game hunting/conservation and you will see the results. Likewise look at the U.S. Hunters here thru nwtf and ducks unlimited pumps millions into conservation and those populations are through the roof. Or you could just act like a silly liberal and cry when the pretty animal is killed.

If not, they are committing a crime against nature and God.

If it is a "crime" against God, where did He say so? You don't get to define sin, only God has that right. How about a chapter and verse? Exodus 20:13 won't work as the consensus among Hebrew scholars is that 'thou shalt not kill' applies only to humans and not animals.

If not for the revenues from hunting fees, the Africans would exterminate the elephants.

It’s too late to be sorry for him, but I am sorry for his wife and five children. He chose a dangerous and unnecessary line of work. You can conduct expensive safaris without unnecessarily killing animals.

Wow. The Disneyfication of Freerepublic. Who’d a thunk it? I guess it’s only ok to kill ugly cows and pigs here.

God’s amazing creatures, fashioned by His love.

To prey on each other and ultimately die hungry as a meal for another animal once it no longer possesses the strength to prey on it's neighbors!

How 'bout that God, huh?

Yeah. I am pro-hunting but leave elephants alone. It sucks badly enough that babies are slowly and agonizingly consumed alive by lions - hours and hours of being slowly eaten alive - often enough that you tube has a ton of it on video.

Elephants need kindness. Their lives are hard enough in so many places.

You can kill all the lions you want though, dentists and others.

I see no sport in it as well. I do, however, participate in it for food.

And we should take "what" away from your admission of ignorance?

Because they will over populate and starvation, disease, or irate natives will kill them in mass.

The meat goes to local tribes.

The animals culled are beyond breeding age and are destructive to local farmers.

They can also be quite dangerous.

The money from these very, very expensive hunts goes to maintain the herds and protect them from poachers.

I am having a hard time finding sympathy for the snowflake in you!!!

Different strokes for different folks. I see no point in killing animals for sport. Should it be illegal? No. Do I have a sense of schadenfreude when an animal occasionally wins? Yes.

Same people mewl and sigh over federally transplanted Canadian wolves that, in my area, have reduced one of the world's great elk herds from 20,000 animals to one-tenth of that.

So pretty, right?

Only they kill for sport.

Their numbers grow while the elk are dead or scattered to the protective confines of giant private hunting ranches, like those owned by Ted Turner, Tom Brokaw, Arthur Blank et al.
