Techie Question

Posted on 05/21/2017 1:20:10 PM PDT by NYAmerican

Question for our Techies out there. For the last few days on my Desktop Computer at home, I could not get on to the PamellaGeller.com and JihadWatch.org websites, but all else appeared fine. The Pam Geller URL brought me to one of those shady "This Domain is for Sale" pages, the Jihad Watch got me nothing. I cleared my browsing History in Chrome and rebooted my ISP's home Router, and now I connect to both legitimate Web Sites just fine. What does this mean? Was something in my Browser or Home Router corrupted or "attacked"? I did not know that DNS queries took place in my home, I thought they were passed on to the big ISP providers.....

I'm thinking the clearing of browsing history did the trick.

You can accidentally get a wrong url, like PamellaGeler.com or something and not notice it.

One “l” in pamelageller.com. Jihad watch works as it should. When you get to pamelageller.com save it to favorites.

I’m not even a techie, but it sounds good.

Try going to ixquick.com and typing in the name of the website you are interested in. One of those results will get you to the proper site and eliminates the typos.

I used to have the same problem with the Drudge site, as it seems there are several similarly-named sites that can fool you if you are not careful.

Run your anti-virus software. It might be a man-in-the middle attack.

PamellaGeller.com still shows the “domain sale” notice. There is nothing shady about that, but Pamela (one “l”) Geller might want to buy the domain and have it redirect to her site, pamelageller.com, to prevent other people from using that URL.

FYI something that can happen is ... you type it wrong the first time ... and wind up at the domain sale site. The problem is your browser then caches that as the last valid 'pam.......' site in it's drop down (because it's a perfectly valid address even though spelled wrong - the browser of course doesn't know it's not what you wanted,) so you keep typing 'pam ..' and accepting the suggested fill in, thinking your browser is suggesting the site, but it's just re-suggesting the wrong one.

Even though I know this, I'll sometimes say 'wtf' to myself 3 or 4 times before I realize it was my own original misspelling the first time. You can clear your browser cache to get out the bad autocomplete ... or ... just type it letter by letter correctly and then go there, so the cache now has a new, correct 'last used 'pame ....'

Thank you all for your replies. I did indeed screw up the spelling of “Pamela” in my posting....At first I assumed that was indeed the real problem....but then I remembered that this all began when I clicked on links contained in my daily emails from both of these two organizations. I don’t think the links were wrong.....unless someone is Phishing on those daily emails from Pam Geller and Jihad Watch? I will have to be much more careful in the future. Thanks again!

Here’s a video that explains somewhat about bit errors:

That’s funny; not being familiar with that site I “misspelled” it with the correct URL! LOL.

Very interesting, watching right now. Thank you! Definitely something going on with these two sites. Using two different platforms, completely different OS’s, browsers, hardware platforms, and ISP’s....access to both of these sites is going on and off, going crazy trying to find a common thread, no luck so far. Assuming this issue is widespread, I keep looking for related complaints on the associated Facebook and Twitter sites, nothing so far! It’s only these two sites, all other Internet access seems normal. Can’t imagine it’s just me, especially because I’m experimenting with two different clients, ISP’s, etc.
