Legalized marijuana turns Colorado resort town into homeless magnet

town into homeless magnet By Joseph J. Kolb Published May 17, 2017 Fox News

NOW PLAYING New poll shows shift on marijuana legalization From his sidewalk vantage point in front of an outdoor equipment store in downtown Durango, Colo., Matthew Marinseck has seen a transformation in this mountain resort town.

The picturesque town near the New Mexico border, once a vibrant, upscale community dotted with luxury hotels, is being overrun by panhandlers – thanks, in part, to the legalization of marijuana.

The town suddenly became a haven for recreational pot users, drawing in transients, panhandlers and a large number of homeless drug addicts, according to officials and business owners. Many are coming from New Mexico, Arizona and even New York.

“Legalized marijuana has drawn a lot of kids here from other states and the impact has not all been good,” said Marinseck, 58, while holding a cardboard sign asking for “help.”

Worked with a guy in the 70’s. In 78 he was having breathing problems, 27 years old. Had been smoking pot since he was 14, no cigarettes. He had emphysema, Doctor said his lungs looked like he had smoked cigs for 50 or 60 years. He had to quit work, never saw him again.

I've known and tried to help a lot of addicts in my life. Without fail, they cling to their lies to rationalize their addictions. Just like you.

Sorry, but FR is no place for stoners.

Continued.

I just got back from Edwards, CO. Just outside Vail. The guy I hung out with is married to a youth services social worker. Marijuana is destroying their teens. Loss of cognitive ability. Lethargy. Respiratory problems.

You're as despicable as the people who defend abortion as a right.

I spent last week in Colorado. I went fly fishing on the Colorado River not too far from Vail. My guide's wife is a youth services social worker. He said the impact of marijuana on Colorado's teens has been really bad.

When those idiots legalized that drug, they knew full well it would wind up in the hands of children. They just didn't care.

“Just like you.”

Wow. You don’t know a thing about me. So I will fill you in on a couple of details. Prior to Feb 2015 I was not a user of cannabis & had zero plans to become one. But after 25+ years of dealing with depression & soul crushing anxiety despite taking the meds I was prescribed that never worked for very long I was faced with long-term hospitalization or suicide. Thankfully, a friend suggested I give cannabis a try.

I thank God our Heavenly Father for her on a daily basis for this. I did give it a try & thanks be to God it works for me. Depression & anxiety no longer rule my life.

So does that make me an addict in your world? I forgive you for your arrogant & woefully false assertion against me regardless.

“Sorry, but FR is no place for stoners.”

Thankfully, you don’t get to make that call. Besides, supporting the nanny-state’s prohibitionist un-Constitutional intrusion into matters best decided by the states is not conservative. Yet, here you are.

It was in the hands of children before legalization. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3190690/posts: Colorado Teens Smoking Less Pot Since Legalization

Those people just plain can not THINK.

Doesn't that make marijuana a dream drug for those pushing collectivist agendas? Pushes for legalization can no doubt be directly tied to DNC voter registration initiatives. :)

“You’re as despicable as the people who defend abortion as a right.”

Ahh, did my rejection of your fallacy trigger you? Poor thing.

My sister-in-law has lived in Boulder Colorado for 25+ years. She is active in her community with many children in the public school system there. She was in for a visit last year & I asked her if she had noticed any changes since cannabis became legal there. She tells me she’s noticed no change at all since full legalization occurred.

Based on your ignorant comments to me, a person of whom you know nothing about I believe her over you. She has no reason to lie to me & you’ve spoke to me uncharitably with contempt despite the fact you know nothing about me.

May the Peace of the Lord be with you, now & always.

How did mankind survive and flourish all these years until we criminalized a natural plant in 1937??

LOL! Moralistic statist "conservatives" are very selective in their recognition of the limits of government power.

Yeah. Without getting into the legalization debate, I just laughed when I read the article and thought, “sounds like Durango like it has been for a few decades”.

The writer has probably never heard the term “Trustafarian”. Telluride is where the term was probably coined. The dreadlocked thimblewits in Durango are just the ones with smaller trust funds.

Ho hum. It’s a mountain town, not as gentrified as Aspen or Park City has become. The twirps are there because they can afford to be.

As soon as legalized recreational pot gets going in California, they’ll all stay here (it’s warmer). Should thin the herd in places like Durango...

I get the impression that there are many here at Free Republic, who support marijuana legalization based on being “libertarian” on the issue, and also based on “state’s rights”; that states, not the federal government, should make laws in this area.

I see a partial conflict, in that, if you are “libertarian”, you should also oppose a state restricting marijuana. If you are truly libertarian on the issue, you would leave it up to all individuals to decide whether to use marijuana. It would not be a federal/state law issue, but an issue for which there should be no laws at all.

I think that now that a number of states have legalized recreational marijuana, that pressures will grow to decriminalize the use of other drugs.

I agree. I saw hippie/pre-hipster elements there in the 90s. I don’t believe Durango has suddenly gone to pot because of pot.
