The CR was for the last of Obama’s fiscal year. For Trump to pitch a major fight over it at this juncture didn’t make much sense. Trump was fully engaged in trying to keep the IC from destroying his presidency in the bud. Plus Ryan and McConnell had zero inclination to modify Obama’s spending habits. Trump could have fought tooth and nsil, emerged bloody, and accomplished nothing.
In September they wrangle over Trump’s first ever budget. It will be harder for Ryan and McConnell to argue that we need to keep propagating Obama’s out of control spending then. If Trump fights—and I predict he will—he’s likely to emerge with something to show for it.
We’ll see.
