Another half-million Americans cut the cord last quarter
Recode ^ | May 3, 2017 | Peter Kafka

The pay TV business used to deny that cord-cutting was a thing. It doesn’t make that argument any more.

Related: The pay TV business just posted a historically horrible number, at least in terms of subscribers, by losing 762,000 customers in the first three months of 2017.

That estimate comes from MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett, one of those people who used to be skeptical about cord-cutting but became a believer a few years ago. He says the industry just had its worst Q1 ever.

Can't be a coincidence that 762,000 Americans cut cable in the first quarter of the year, and TV ratings are at historic lows. Terrible network shows, TV shows pushing agendas, stars like Meryl Streep attacking President Trump and conservatives at Award Shows, and people no longer able to afford cable due to Obamacare. Way to go liberals.

Good!

ESPN loses $6 per lost subscriber. Cut that place to the bone with the PC b.s.

Guess I’m not alone then. Clipped cable a couple of months ago.

As soon as I can figure out how to get just the 10-12 channels I watch, I’m cutting too.

Except for some sporting events and some obscure tv shows you can watch virtually anything on cable for free using a TV box or stick (android box, fire stick) and a digital over-the-air antenna. You can even watch lots of foreign shows not on US or Canadian cable like LOTS of stuff from Australia and Scandinavia.

I just moved out of the metro area into the country. I want badly to get satellite tv for various reasons but just can’t bring myself to do it. I absolutely refuse to support MSNBC, the homosexual channel, CNN, etc. I cut the cord several years ago.

The only station I watched was Turner Classic Movies and TNT (Angie Harmon, hubba hubba). It wasn’t worth $175 per month. Cut the cable 3 years ago. There’s plenty to see on Netflix and Amazon Prime. I would pay $10 or so a month for TCM if it were possible. Then there’s Acorn TV which will get you scads of Brit TV for $5 per month on Amazon. Plenty of entertainment to be had cheaply. But it’s finally nice weather so time to shut off the box and get the Tiger1050 on the road.

I fired the wire a little over 4 years ago. Don’t miss it a bit.

We get the bare minimum until Feb when our contract expires. We bought the smart tv already though and will use it primarily for Amazon.

Good post, good news!

I know mothers who use a television as a babysitter, never realizing how badly their children are being indoctrinated/brainwashed.

I gave away all my TV sets (5) eight years ago, and my life is so much more fun living - I pity the couch potatoes...

The new episodes of MST3K are on Netflix. And you can see just about any older show on YouTube. Is there really any reason to have cable at all?

In the not too distant future, nobody will be on cable.

But are you really "cutting the cord"? You still need high-speed Internet access and alas, in many places the fastest provider IS the cable company. And Comcast is about to start the national rollout of DOCSIS 3.1 gigabit-speed Internet, too.

6 Years cable/satellite free now... Have neighbors (and children) paying $150+/month for "TV Premium Services" (which they seldom watch!)

Years ago I just bothered with a Roku device rather than Cable, I can pick exactly which channels I wish to follow, and exactly what movies I want to watch. It’s excellent. It’s cheap, and technology like that, AmazonFire,AppleTV, etc. will likely put cable eventually out of business.

Between Hulu, iTunes, Netflix, Amazon, and apps, you should be able to get everything you want. Get an Apple TV.
