The Texas Senate has approved a bill that would eliminate the state's mandatory safety inspections for most vehicles.

Texas is one of slightly more than a dozen states that still require safety inspections that test for things like properly-working horns, brakes and brake lights, headlights and seat belts. According to a Senate study, more than 500,000 vehicles didn't pass safety inspection in 2014 and 2015.

I live in Brazoria County...next to Harris..,and we have the emissions testing. I wish it was only $7.

It must have been a quickie because I hadn’t heard about it until a couple of days ago.

Hope this vehicle inspection thing goes to the trash pile of history.

Ya know, folks that are just trying to eek out a living, making something like 32K a year, having to pay taxes, insurance...all the rest...then it comes inspection time and their auto throws a check engine light for some crappy EPA emission sensor.

It could cost that person hundreds to get their vehicle repaired to be able to meet the emission standards on the computerized inspection. Now...they don’t get to buy that set of tires, they have to figure out how to pay the daycare so they can WORK.

Yea....hope this comes to fruition.

This has been a ripoff for Texans forever.

Not to mention the money they made from giving out tickets for expired inspection stickers!

I’ve did most of necesary work on my own cars for about 50 years. I have the computer readers that can pick up many problems. The problem is the newer vehicles are so complex, you may have a serious problem and not know it until it is too late. This is especially true for folks that aren’t mechanically savvy. Inspections may force folks that totally ignore car maintenance off the road until thay are safe to drive. I still think paying $40 a year to have a real comprehensive test on a vehicle makes sense so I will still do that even if I have to take my older truck to a dealer to check it out.

Hope this gets passed into law. Those inspections are mostly a farce.

Update: From what I have read at other sources, the law as now written will go into effect March 1st.

“Our laws take effect Sept. 1, unless they want it ended sooner.” Ahh, thanks!

A bill has to pass with at least a 2/3'rds majority in both the House and Senate in order for it to go into effect immediately after the governor signs the bill in Texas.
