Bring Back the Draft? Your Thoughts!!

Should we bring back the draft?

In the wake of another Memorial Day, when most Americans recognized their fallen veterans by staying home from the office, it’s worth taking a moment to consider a perennial question: Should the military draft return? Yes, argued Joseph Epstein in The Atlantic earlier this year. Epstein, a short story writer and former draftee who served in the Army from 1958 to 1960, opposes an all-volunteer force for several reasons: It’s unfair for a tiny percentage of Americans—less than one percent—to shoulder the burden of fighting wars; the American public isn’t knowledgeable enough on foreign policy; the draft could rehabilitate young criminal offenders; and, most of all, a draft would contribute to the “melting pot” that makes America great.

Hell no!

Anyone who wants to bring the draft back has never had to lead a bunch of resentful people who balk at almost anything except their narrowly defined self-interest.

I always said I could have accomplished my missions with two-thirds of my strength. One-third were enthusiastic and good soldiers no matter how they got in the service. Another third, while not exactly enthusiastic, did a good job.

The final third. Could have left them out of the picture all together w/o sacrificing an operational bit.

Then what can I say of the approx. 15% that were 95% of the disciplinary problems I had to deal with.

seems the more draftees, the better the results.

I look at it the other way round.

It's a lot harder to use a draftee army to fight a war which our "leadership" has decided we're not going to win.

I used to think that bringing back a Draft would be a good idea. But, now? Perhaps a type of conscription for training and familiarization with military order and discipline for two years.
However, any type of program such as this would have to have real teeth in it. But it just won’t work. The only correction needed is a good old fashioned pandemic or catastrophic disaster in which large percentages of a given population are shocked back to reality, or perishes in the calamity.

Haven’t read the thread comments yet...

I think men and women at age 18 should be drafted into the military service or community service (if unfit for the military) for at least two years.

18 y/o kids aren’t prepared for heavy college work or the real world, and as we see daily they are becoming wimps.

I wasn’t a ‘wiz-bang’ student in HS. I enlisted in the Naval Air Reserves (weekend warriors) in Oct of my Sr. year in HS at age 17. ....One year later I was on active duty on an aircraft carrier.

After my two years of commitment for active duty (then age 20) I returned to my reserve status. I met up with some of my old friends and was shocked by their immaturity.

That three years of reserve/active service had matured me about 4-5 years beyond my former HS classmates.

The discipline and responsibility I learned in those two years of active duty pushed me far ahead of the others who did not enter service.

Sorry for the long posting, but it’s something I feel strongly about.

I would suggest this: Every American after graduating from high school/turning 18 years gives two years service. Armed forces get first pick, then Public Health Service, Peace Corps,Vista etc. No waivers except for severe physical deformities. No service means no government jobs,no government loans, no government contracts etc.

The Military has been "PC-Bastardized" for long enough - it's not a social club or a rehabilitation center and being more "diverse' is a left-wing "positive" which does nothing towards inflicting so much death and destruction on an enemy that it comes crawling to you so it can lick your boots.

Ridiculous.

The types of people you listed are obviously unfit for military service and would not be accepted.

...Of course, that would probably lead to lots of folks claiming to be LGBT to avoid service, but the military really don’t want them anyway.

Fuck no. Just retired, 24 years, 05 Army. The draft would cause huge problems. The quality of many new enlisted soldier is already poor. I said many, not all. The biggest changes I saw over my career were PT and piss tests. I had too many dumbass soldiers getting popped for THC. Too many soldiers that couldn’t pass an APFT. As a 45 year old LTC I could beat 90% of the battalion in the 2 mile run. I’m no track star either.

No. In places such as Israel where everybody’s butt is on the line it works. But here in the land of affluence and softness (Julius Ceasar dubbed it effeminate) it won’t work for all the reasons given in just about all the comments posted.

Historically if you look at 2 Chronicles chapter 13 starting around verse 3 or 4 you’ll even see that in ancient times they chose their armies. These armies did not volunteer but they were chosen in a selective way, perhaps from men wishing to compete for position.

13:1 Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah.13:2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.13:3 And Abijah set the battle in array with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: Jeroboam also set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of valour.

Keep in mind countries of yore were warrior societies. It was cultural and survival depended on it.

The undercurrent of felony in this country is breeding out national pride. In our case Society needs to make crime sufferable, not a demented type of PC vaycay. Without instilling a healthy respect for authority. A Draft would not work as were... you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink.

You are too busy being horrified about the possibility of the draft to see from what I wrote that the whole idea of using it for social engineering or to validate previous social engineering would have to go. That is heavily implied when “male only draft.” Girls who think they want to be boys are not and cannot be men. Homosexuals would be taken in and washed out after a certain short period because one doesn’t know if a man is queer just because he says he is to avoid the draft. All the others would simply be forced to be men for the duration. With no general draft, wars become something “they” do. The people don’t worry about it so much and the protesting and disruption are much worse because there is no draft or because there is a less than universal draft.

Yes and no.

All enlistment eligible men( physical, moral & mentally) serve IET (Basic Combat Tng-Army/Boot Camp-USN/USMC Basic Military Tng- USAF etc) in the service of their choice,if acceptable to that service or to any by lottery then IRR for 8 years. If satisfactory completion of Initial Entry training,, then they qualify for college benefits etc. Non-enlistment qualified select from menu of acceptable public service venues and similarly qualify for college bennies upon successful completion.

Women have a choice- same program as men but enlistment qual/unqual can choose public service venues too.

Young men and women can choose to enlist and serve on AD etc and qualify for their services specific benefits or careers and go mainstream military.

If anyone who is qualified/unqualified refuses either IET or public service choices; fine- they are disqualified from any and all education programs permanently.
