This was quite upsetting to me because I've been walking into that store for fishing supplies and other things for over 15 years, and the last six with a loaded gun on my hip. Hell, they SELL guns there. Guns, gun belts, holsters, magazine carriers, and all sorts of concealed carry goodies.
Soooo, I'll be writing a letter to their corporate offices and ask them about this policy.
How am I supposed to try on some pants to see if my gun, holster and belt will function properly if I can't have my loaded gun in their shop?!
Ridiculous!
This Ping List is for all things pertaining to the 2nd Amendment.
FReepmail me if you want to be added to or deleted from the list.
Belts and suspenders.
Don’t shop there again.
there is a youtube video titles ‘pocket carry’ Now, now. It has a bunch of suggestions you might need. the lecturer is a hefty dude, so he might mention ‘something’ of a ‘lightbulb moment’.
Who woulda thunk ... Sportsman Warehouse, a gun free zone!!
” I wanted to try out some of their pants to see if they sagged like the ones I was currently wearing when my gun was attached to them. “
You are trying on clothing for your concealed carry so you will be handling your weapon. In that case, the safe policy is to verify the weapon is unloaded ...
NOT REDICULOUS.
I love the Wilderness Instructor belt. Got mine at GT Distributing in Austin. You might want to add a pair of Dickie’s Perry suspenders, Walmart.

As for your search for a suitable pair of pants, I suggest going to a tailor. You may have to try a couple to find one that listens to your requirements without overreacting to the word ‘gun’ with undue fear. Let’s face it, at least 35% of the population would act this way.
As for shopping with a loaded gun. I tend to understand the cashiers point. However, I am very uneducated about what is usually the fair and proper procedure. I’m one of those people who wants to know more about guns, and plan to take a few pistol training courses when I can afford to do it.
For now, though, I don’t know what is commonly done.
Do some stores allow you to store your weapon after you have removed any bullets or cartridges? I can presume they don’t want to worry about bumping into the store box and having it fire by accident.
Is not being able to store a pre-loaded gun really a dealbreaker for your retail business? You are entitled to your opinion and choices. As I said, I do not have a lot of direct knowledge about it, and am learning what is commonly done from reading posts on FR plus other places.
Get a small light gun.
She then directed me to their safe box and said for me to put the muzzle into it and pull the trigger to make sure that it was empty.
I said, "It's not empty. Why would I carry an empty pistol?"
She said, "It's LOADED?"
Just LOL
Soooo...remove the magazine and pocket it, clear the firearm and go back in. Do as they request to prove it is empty but keep the piece with you. Then when in the dressing room, replace the magazine and try on the pants you’ve chosen.
Lesson learned: If you’re carrying legally, never tell anyone you’re carrying legally. There’s always going to be that pearl-clutching liberal who will cause trouble.
She asked if I had my gun on me, and I said I did. ...
Reminds me when my wife asked me if I had my gun with me as we walked back to the car after shopping.
I said, “Yes. Why, is there someone you would like me to kill?” ;)
I’ve seen enough morons at gun counters to sympathize with the cashier/store policy. Places that sell guns...well, you end up with people pointing guns everywhere to ‘try them out’. I don’t blame them for wanting them all to be unloaded.
My local Cabelas even has a basket full of ‘rubber ducky’ AR-15’s for people to ‘aim’ around, to keep people occupied.
Odd on their part. Probably an uninformed employee.
5.11 pants. Accept no substitute

Why I like Cabelas - ladies stuff for CWP’s there as well.
If you are wearing a good gun belt, and it sounds like you definitely are, and your pants still sag, it isn’t the belt and it isn’t the pants. Either you don’t have the belt tight enough or you’re not wearing your belt on the correct part of your body.
With a good gun belt, you should be able to wear just the belt and holster while being otherwise nekkid, and the belt should stay on your hip. If your belt slides down, it’s too loose and you need to crank in another notch.
Also, you may be wearing your pants too high. The belt should be riding just above your hip bone. When cinched properly, the circumference of the belt is less than the circumference of your body at it’s widest point on your hipbones, and it is impossible for the belt to get past your hips.
If you wear your pants high, they will sag down to your hipbones no matter what pants you’re wearing. If you wear your pants low, either on your hips or just below, then your pants are going to sag no matter how tightly you cinch your belt.
The only other possibility is that you have no hips, and you’re one of those Slim Jim body types.
If you don’t want to change where your pants ride, or you have the build of a matchstick, then the only solution is what YardDog said; suspenders.
Currently struggling with this myself. Had to by pants (Carhart) a couple inches bigger in the waist and I’m not used to untucked outer shirts. Have to pretty much change my style of dress.
Does Sportsmans have a sign on their store? They can’t do that if they don’t, I won’t shop there anymore I they do. (the I-25 store?)
While it may not suit your particular gun you might try ankle carry in an ankle holster. I think your gun may be too big for that but I cannot be sure. And ankle holsters are cheap to experiment with.
Just a suggestion because over the last 35 years I have carried every way known to man. On duty, off duty, in shorts, inside WB, in hot weather, in cold weather and I finally decided after I retired that a gun was no good to me if I left it in my truck because it would be uncomfortable, weigh me down, etc.
Since you wear long pants all the time you don’t have to worry about wearing shorts where obviously an ankle holster won’t work. But remember skinny pants with a tapered leg won’t work. But basic khakis are fine.
I have taken to wearing long pants all of the time and wear a six dollar velcro ankle holster on top of a 1/2 or 3/4 chukka or hiking type boots so the holster sits right on top of the top of the boot. I can run, walk, roll around on the ground and the gun goes nowhere. I go where I want carrying 100 percent of the time and nobody knows the difference. And I don’t even feel the gun on my ankle anymore.
Now the downside is I don’t carry my .40 or .45 as I would like to. I found myself leaving that gun in my vehicle far too often. I had to go down to a compact .380. Again a gun is better than no gun. But you must practice retrieving the gun and shooting.
I wished I lived in a cold climate like Montana or Idaho because you can conceal so easy with a lot of clothes and outer garments. But I live in the deep south. It’s hot.
Just my humble opinion. Take it for what it’s worth.
I use a holster T shirt.
they come in numerous types, V neck, regular, lots of colors. They are basically a spandex T shirt.
Amazon sells them.
you can wear it under any regular shirt, including a polo.
They are very comfortable and will fit right in with a fashion guru like yourself.
Sell for around $60 but remember, your buying a holster..... not a T shirt!
