The state representative offers an example of how crappy we are to victims
Sometimes feminists use the term rape culture to try to distill down the way our society seems set up to give rapists as easy a time as possible, while making things as shitty as possible on victims, especially if one feels compelled to publicly accuse someone of rape.
We got to see that dynamic play out in last weeks council meeting when they praised a man accused of sexual misconduct and called his alleged victims liars, which, God, if theres a more shameful moment in our city this year, I hope Im unconscious and cant witness it.

There, fixed it
(that one was almost too easy )
Forgive me if I’m still wondering if Elizabeth Thomas was complicit in some way. When I saw the picture of her and Cummins on the run at the Wal Mart she was looking up at him with affection and not fear.
With the possibility of Stockholm Syndrome at play we may never know if it was abduction or seduction. Either way he was in the wrong and should be punished.
Affection? Looked more like a zombie to me.
Of course Elizabeth was complicit. She was obviously in love with her teacher. But she was also 15. He didn’t kidnap her, she went willingly. But that doesn’t excuse his act. Cummins is not only legally guilty he is morally guilty, he’s a slimeball.
In fairness she looked like a zombie BEFORE she was kidnapped!
I agree.
Your position in its entirety asserts that children are mentally ready and legally responsible for making life's important choices themselves in spite of their parents and guardians.
There is not one part of your post that doesn't emphatically promote that idea.
If that is not who you are and what you believe you might want to ask the moderators to delete it. Or you can double down and defend it.
I have no knowledge of the situation other than what’s been reported, but it sounds like this girl may have had an unstable home life and the teacher capitalized/took advantage of that. Also sounds like his defense will be “she wanted to go” or “I was protecting her”
I don’t need to defend anything. I’m not saying to drop charges against Cummins I just said I wonder if she went willingly.
I’m sure the FBI, TBI, and local police asked or are asking that same question.
If that offends you then that’s your misfortune.
I have known Tad Cummins over the years, and I think I could honestly tell you that Im not surprised that shes safe...
I really think she should have just left out this part of the statement.
One of the Butt sisters??
Exactly. It seems that he fell in love with her, didn't have the moral wherewithal to stand down, and threw himself into this mess willingly being led by emotion. And that she is, if not in love (she could be), than very infatuated with him.
She's just a kid and regardless of her feelings bears no responsibility for this. He, on the other hand, should have known better and should have cut this off before his feelings for her became too strong.
He allowed himself to cross the point of no return and threw his life away in search of a dream.
Bertha, Betty, Bella or Bathsheba?
You’re wondering if she was complicit? I’ve been wondering if she is the mastermind of the so called abduction.
There are a number of signs indicating that she is not-truthful and very manipulative.
I believe 100% that she had joined him willingly. I never got the impression, despite what was said, that she was kidnapped. She is a 15 year old girl, possibly not very bright, likely not a strong relationship with her father, and I suspect she was quite attached to this guy.
OTOH, she IS only 15 and he is guilty of abusing her....at the very least, statutory rape (depending on what the age limit is).
Agree, she looked like she felt affection for him. Who knows why...perhaps she seduced him and he couldn’t resist. I knew a man who taught at some community college in San Francisco who said his female students would come to his office and offer sex in return for grades, even pulling up their shirts to advertise.....very tricky situation, because he would be at fault no matter what. .
Not saying this is what happened here, and certainly if it did, Cummins HAD TO act like a responsible adult and say no.
She’s just a kid and regardless of her feelings bears no responsibility for this.
(((
Legally, she bears noresponsibility. Morally she does. She is not an infant.
Frau Butt used the phrase “lost sheep”, and the Scene writer did not recognize the Biblical reference and therefore completely misunderstood the meaning.
Betsy Philips is a lefty screedmonger. Not to be taken seriously. She does write some good local history blog posts.
