Trump backs away from demand for border wall money (AP, but just a heads up, maybe...)

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump stepped back Monday from demanding a down payment for his border wall in must-past spending legislation, potentially removing a major obstacle to a bipartisan deal just days ahead of a government shutdown deadline.

Trump told a gathering of around 20 conservative media reporters Monday evening that he would be willing to return to the wall funding issue in September, according to two people who were in the room. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the get-together, which was not originally intended to be on the record.

Trump, if you do this, you could lose your entire support base.

I'm serious.

But it's AP. Let's wait and see...

NO!! Pres. Trump, go to the people and plead your case.
That was the number one issue that got you elected.
Light a fire under your supporters and they will burn up the congressional phone lines.

He was elected to build the wall.

It will pay for itself in a matter of a few months. We’re spending $84 billion annually on illegal aliens.

Sometimes you have to pick the right time for the fight. The Wall is controversial and has zero Dem support and not all GOP support it. So if Govt shuts down, GOP and of course Trump get the blame and The Wall would be the issue that caused it.

Short run - Obamacare and Tax Cut are more important.

Long run - The Wall and legal immigration

This funding gets us to September. Six months. This could be about terminology. It is not a wall it is border security. A way for both sides to win. Get some border money in exchange for Obabacare subsidy money. Another example - It was not an email investigation, it was a matter.

Only two “polls” count 2918 and 2020 and a lot can happen and will and many unexpected.

When I receive dispensation from the Committee on Trump Correctness to express an opinion, I would point out:

On the record:

Trump turned again to Twitter: "The Wall is a very important tool in stopping drugs from pouring into our country and poisoning our youth (and many others)! If the wall is not built, which it will be, the drug situation will NEVER be fixed the way it should be! #BuildTheWall."

Off the record:

But some of the CONSERVATIVE JOURNALISTS who met Monday evening with Trump reported HE SAID WALL FUNDING COULD WAIT UNTIL THE FALL. Prior to the White House demand late last week for border wall money, it had largely been assumed on Capitol Hill that the spending measure would include funding for additional security steps along the border, but that there wouldn't be any money explicitly dedicated for new wall construction. That approach now appears likely to prevail. (Emphasis supplied).

No.

I think this is the one issue Trump must support strongly, without any backing off.

Not even one inch.

This is why he won.

Do not back off on this issue Mr. President.

How is it that we witnessed McConnell-Boehner-Ryan dish up everything Obama wanted that the American people did not want, yet deny this President and the American people that which is so strongly expressed as a fundamental protection of security?

It's all about public perception. If we get to 2018 and American voters all across the country still have to walk past a bunch of Mexicans hanging out at the local Home Depot just to buy some hardware and lumber, the GOP will be relegated to minority status once again.

This is exactly what happened in 2006, folks.

The wall will happen. Illegal border crossings are already plummeting.

He ain’t losing my vote if I don’t see it immediately.

The effect is working.

Sometimes you have to pick the right time for the fight.

Blah, blah, blah.

That is the kind of (GOPe) thinking that has got us in to the mess we are in now.

But, but you say there are "bigger fish to fry."

I am so sick and tired of this kind of thinking. We will acquiesce here and come back to it later. Only, you never come back to the problem that deserved attention and now it is a bigger problem. And then, we acquiesce again. And round and round we go.

Ever notice that the Democrats NEVER acquiesce?

I consider myself part of Trump’s base and he isn’t going to lose me in the first 100 days because of this. This was always going to be a tough nut to crack. He has at least 1,365 days left to crack it.

Well I likewise consider myself part of Trump’s base.

(I decided he was the guy, even before he announced his candidacy.)

I have been with him, since the very beginning.

He could lose me, if he backs off on this.

This is serious.

Nothing except global trade, is as important.

People who favor technology and enforcement at the border will say there is too much illegal immigration, and that this is a problem. This presupposes that there is another, lower level of illegal immigration that is just right and is not a problem.

People who favor a border wall say there is illegal immigration and that this is a problem. They have an absolute position, that says even a single person crossing the border without authorization is a crime, and that this crime must be controlled.

Trump has lately been taking the latter position. If he starts backing off the wall, this will signal that he has moved towards the “Goldilocks” position, and desires to enforce the “just right” level of illegal immigration.

“The Wall is controversial”

If these “conservative” congressmen fund planned parenthood and defund the wall they will be exposed as the frauds that they are.

Yes, funding for planned parenthood is in the spending bill.

Oh no, not another deadline? Not another crisis?

If this was such a crisis, why did Congress just take two weeks off?

This government by crisis is pathetic.

Oh, I forgot. When is the GOPe going to pull out their tried and true, "it was the best deal we could get?"

This was always going to be a tough nut to crack.

Why is it a tough nut to crack? We have the White House and both houses of Congress.

IMHO, the most important issue at this time is taking more power from the Dems in the mid-term elections and the second most important issue is taking more power from the Dems in the 2020 election and getting Trump a second term so we can continue to dominate the supreme court. That’s our path to restoring America. So Trump needs to choose his battles wisely. The Dems are seriously wounded and they’re dangerous. we need to finish them. That’s all that matters to me.
