When I was young, we had an ice box that didn’t run on electricity. The ice man came every Friday.

I lived in both worlds, as I live part time with my grand parents on their truck patch farm, granny cooked on a wood burning stove, we had a out house, chicken coop, garden, citzern, and when the weather was nice took baths in a #10 wash tub. She had 9 kids 7 of them girls. They cooked, cleaned, worked, as she did, grandpa had Black Lung so he supervised. She worked in a shirt factory, lived through the Great Depression.

Never had a loaf of bread, my uncle had left over biscuits or cornbread with meat in his lunch box. First thing the cousins did was head to her kitchen looking for those biscuits when they finally moved up north from TN to the ‘modern’ world.

She never changed her ways, just modified them a little. My mom was the same way. I make my own bags, what few I get, I reuse as trash liners in bathroom or as wet trash so my kitchen doesn’t stink. Being on a septic line your garbage disposal is nearly useless. Waste of time to put one in really. I’ve grand #7 on the way and am making receiving blankets, afghan, diaper bag, and a crib quilt, burp cloths, they will be better quality than the crap you get in the store. And won’t cost $100+ for a diaper bag and will be personalized to the mom’s taste. Sewing/crocheting is nearly a lost art.
