Another account of this story introduced me to a strange term: "school resource officer". Back when I was in school, they didn't have those. The link said (boldface added):

But when he [little John Haygood] went back to school for mandatory testing April 12, WPEC said, a school resource officer recognized him and confirmed there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

What might a school resource officer be?

A quick google reveals the answer: a pig on school grounds.

We didn't need such when I was in school.

We had a vice principal with a paddle at both the high schools I attended. I’m guessing similar for you.

Odd. School Resource Officers have been in schools since 1953.
The first, but many came to be years later.
Mostly in city schools around here but also other places.

Haha the ignorance on this thread increases with every post.
