Russia has banned Jehovah’s Witnesses after the Supreme Court ruled the Christian sect to be an “extremist” group.
“The Supreme Court has ruled to sustain the claim of Russia’s ministry of justice and deem the ‘Administrative Centre of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia’ organisation extremist, eliminate it and ban its activity in Russia,” said judge Yuri Ivanenko.
“The property of the Jehovah’s Witnesses organisation is to be confiscated to the state revenue.”
A lawyer for the justice ministry, Svetlana Borisova, told the court adherents “pose a threat to the rights of the citizens, public order and public security”.
Judges ordered the closure of the group’s Russian headquarters and 395 local chapters, as well as the seizure of its property.
Lawyers for the Jehovah’s Witnesses said they would appeal the court’s decision, which has not yet come into effect, and could take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.
“We will do everything possible,” Sergei Cherepanov, a Jehovah’s Witnesses representative, was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.
In 2010, judges in Strasbourg found a previous ruling by a Russian court to ban the organisation unlawful.
The ministry of justice had previously applied for an order to shut down its national headquarters near St Petersburg, state media reported.
Its administrative centre, which has 175,000 members, had previously been suspended in March over alleged “extremist activity”.

The Orthodoxers are afraid of losing revenue. Also as the official state church they want to help the Russian govt to rule over the people so any sect that puts conscience above law is to be suppressed.
The word cult is misused as usual. A religion that is open to anyone to join is not a cult. A cult is a closed group that’s hard to join like the KGB or a Satanic Coven. The word cult is used to prepare the way for taking away someone’s rights. Nothing more.
So they’re banning a nonviolent, law abiding religion that pretty much minds its own business because it won’t shill for the government? That makes a whole lot of sense.

Jehovah witnesses are annoying not dangerous. but my thinking is that Russia is fearful of them because they are a group that will take a stand for purely moral reasons and are willing to go to jail over theses stands.
In WWII, the Nazis forced JWs to wear a purple triangle (just as Jews had to wear yellow stars of David). Many JWs were killed or sent to work camps because they refused to heil Hitler. I’m not a JW (and never have been), but they showed remarkable strength of belief and character in not bowing before Hitler.

I’m sure close to home there are ones that want Catholicism labeled a terrorist organization, protestantism labeled a terrorist organization and definitely Judaism labeled a terrorist organization, as the college Elite would love it.

And it's the same thing that Israel has done. Conservatives worship Israel and have much more respect for Israel than they do for America, so that should give you something to think about.
Israel is a Religion Ethno-state. Genetic Jews live there, and you must have Judaism as your religion to be granted the right of return.

Americans think that a kind of absolute “Freedom of Religion” is a universal concept.
Not at all. The USA and a few other places are very much the exception.
For the rest of the world, religion is national culture, and its very much part of politics. No judgement on it - its simply the way the world is.
