3 year old i7 minitower was starting to bog down. Replaced HD with an SSD. Now it’s INSANELY fast.

Somehow, I have never gotten affected by any nasty virus. Only things which get loaded on my computer are unwanted Ads. I remove them using an Add-blocker program, occasionally.

Besides, in this era of ridiculously cheap computers, I use a separate computer for financial dealings. And I only connect to a very limited banks & brokers on that computer.

So, if my general browsing computer gets infected with viruses, it will cause me no problem. All I have to do is re-format the hard drive and load a fresh copy of OS.

The best bang for the buck is to upgrade to an SSD. They are amazingly fast.

Yes, in my 55 years of working with computers, hardware degradation has been observed to slow things down. I began association with computers using punch cards LOL.

On my Acer Notebook Laptop, obviously the hardware was still functioning OK, the slowdown was somehow related to battery services. Removing that connection seems to have speeded up the laptop significantly.

No need. Simply find a Secret Service car, and wa-la, free puter.

“Ctl-Alt-Delete”, check your “Processes” and get them down to under 80 or so using “msconfig” to stop them from starting at bootup. (Leave your antivirus on tho.).

The method I posted in the original post has cost of zero bucks. The bang for the buck therefore approaches infinity LOL..

But you are probably 101% right that upgrading to SSD would benefit speed.

Oh man, you have no idea how many hours I spent playing with processes & services. It was all futile on my Acer Notebook.

The SSD is sumpin’ else. My new Acer laptop boots in about 20 seconds. Contrary to another poster, I have 4 Acer laptops, having just replaced the oldest one that died after 8 years of service.

Interesting point! You may want to try this...with battery installed in laptop, plug in the adapter but do not start windows. I have a feeling the battery charging light will be on, without Windows running. Please post your findings?

Run PERFMON /REL from the command prompt, this will display a graph depicting issues that affect your computers performance!

Two things a lot of people and techs don't consider when speeding up a PC is resetting the virtual ram to 1.5 what the physical ram is and updating the bios.

I have had a lot of success with that along with cleaning temp files and updating graphics/network drivers.

Just did that from command prompt. It came back with a chart of bars but did not give me any clue about specific problems.

Been doing that for a long time. It did not help speed up my ageing Acer notebook. Here is the procedure to change pagefile size:

Click the Start button,
right-click Computer,
and then click Properties.

In the left pane, click Advanced system settings.
Administrator permission required If you’re prompted
for an administrator password or confirmation,
type the password or provide confirmation.

On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.

Click the Advanced tab, and then, under Virtual memory,
click Change.

Clear the Automatically manage paging file size for all
drives check box.

Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that
contains the paging file you want to change.

Click Custom size, type a new size in megabytes in the
Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, click Set,
and then click OK. Recommend 4096 / 8192 or more depending on size of hard disk & physical memory.

It is basically all blank report, with a dozen or so vertical bars of equal height. At the bottom it said, “no reports to display”.
