FULL TITLE: 'She barely spoke and he kept her in the car': Caretaker details how he recognized and then helped police bust armed Amber Alert teacher and his 15-year-old student in 4am raid - and complains shows he refilled his Cialis prescription before skipping town

A northern California caretaker is speaking out to detail how he helped police arrest the Tennessee teacher who had been on the run for more than a month with his 15-year-old student.

Tad Cummins, 50, was taken into custody Thursday morning by a SWAT team who surrounded the unfinished cabin in Cecilville, California where he was staying with missing teen Elizabeth Thomas.

Police got a tip about Cummins' whereabouts the previous night from the caretaker of the cabin, 29-year-old Griffin Barry.

Barry, who is originally from Nashville, said he let the couple stay in the cabin in exchange for work and realized who the two were when a neighbor showed him a picture of Thomas' missing person poster.

That's when it all came together for Barry and he called to tip off police. Looking back, he said there was something suspicious about the couple.

"She barely spoke...." For those of you who think she went willingly think this puts that theory to rest.

His lawyer will argue she went willingly; you watch.

True but that’s like saying a 15 year-old can buy a house so long as they are willing to do it.

Uhhh.no. She’s not old enough to give consent so there can’t be “willingly”. .

Willingly or not she's under the age of consent, so that doesn't let him off the hook - might mitigate the sentence (maybe from 120 years to 60 years?).

Useless argument; she may have but it matters not at all. She is underage. And the teacher will never see daylight again.

After all this media coverage his lawyer will be telling him to plead out before the lynch mob comes.

Two points here. 1. Legally. 2. Actually

Legally, no question.

Actually? Not so sure. Time will tell. Even if she claims it was against her will, it doesn’t mean that it was. Of course she would claim that, now that they are caught.’

Again, time will tell.

The caretaker who turned in the perv will be getting a $10,000 reward, according to a Nashville TV station. A co-worker of the perv put up the $10K. The caretaker looks like a nice guy (originally from TN) who can use the money.

Kidnapping is a federal crime. Will this be tried in a federal court ? In CA or TN?
The girl will never be the same regardless of whether she went willingly or not. that is almost irrelevant, especially given er age. She will need counseling for years and years to come.

Actually no. Even if a 15 year-old wanted to sign a legal contract, it can’t be done because they are considered too young to make that decision. They are not considered old enough to say “yes”.

Rather odd that a 15 year-old can say “yes” to an abortion but not to sex.

You are correct AP UNLESS it’s to obtain an abortion and/or contraception in some states. Then all bets are off.

I don’t know the girl’s birth date, so am unaware if she is toward the early or late end of 15, but suspect she was only 14 when this guy started manipulating her. By the time they ran off, she might have gone “willingly” only if one discounts all the manipulation the perp subjected her to. She is 100% the victim in this situation. He is 100% at fault.

Rejected by the commune- was he wearing a ‘make America great’ hat?
Cummings was quoted as ‘being glad it was over’ - dream on - this is his never ending nightmare!

To the other posters on this: I was merely stating the obvious of what his lawyer might use as a defense is all. I’ve heard/read lots of stupid defenses put on by lawyers and I bet this will be one of them; he/she will state why didn’t the girl yell for help or something something and will wind up blaming the kid.

Yes, but I’m sure his fellow prisoners will make the remainder of his life just a bowl full of cherries.

Or not.

She’s old enough to give consent for an abortion but not to go off with a man.

Years ago I was on a jury for a case which involved a man who had robbed a liquor store. He had forced the cash register guy and a customer who happened to be in the store to go into a back room. That was considered “kidnapping”...and he did not even force them to go shopping at Wal-Mart.

Better be careful about saying that she’s not old enough. Yesterday I had numerous FReepers trying to “educate” me about how eons ago 13 - 16 year old girls could and did get married. In fact, one said that our standards today are Puritanical.

Here’s another Cummins wannabe!!!!! Too busy to start a thread.

https://patch.com/maryland/owingsmills

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — A Baltimore County middle school teacher is being held without bail after police said he sexually abused a 13-year-old girl during school hours.

Chadwick F. Zamarron, 35, of the 4300 block of Breeders Cup Court in Randallstown, is a teacher at Northwest Academy of Health Sciences.

Police allege Zamarron became physically involved with the teen in February and March.
