I don't think he's an a-hole. Rather closer ideologically to the right than the left. Do you have any examples of statements or behavior that would qualify him as an a-hole?

Maybe it is his shtick. I have always found that “look down the nose too cool for the room” crap to be disguising.
Maybe I conflate the shtick with the guy.
