The United Pilots Union has gone to great lengths to clarify that they had nothing to do with this. The captain was not involved.

I thought the captain was the one in charge of the plane?

I’m not an expert, but I’ve been told that until the cabin door is shut and secured, the ground crew is in charge. Someone else said the captain’s absolute control doesn’t kick in until the plane is airborne.

I’m just relaying what I’ve been told, fwiw.
