Autistic boy ‘snack shamed’ for bringing banana bread to school, Calgary mom says
National Post (Postmedia) ^ | April 10, 2017 | Shawn Logan

A Calgary mom says her autistic son was “snack shamed” for taking banana bread to school, forced to eat in the hallway while his Grade 1 classmates ate fresh fruits and vegetables.

The mom, whom Postmedia has agreed not to identify over concerns her six-year-old son could be punished, said she recently learned he had been removed from class for the offending snack.

“They told me they only allow fresh fruits and vegetables for snack time,” she said, noting there are limited foods he will actually eat.

“He was told to sit outside of the class to eat his snack. It’s not right. He’s being punished by being made to eat by himself.”

The mom said her son is on the higher functioning side of the autism spectrum and attends regular classes at a Calgary public school despite his special needs.

But by ostracizing her child from his classmates, she feels it’s hurting his development and contributing to his growing antipathy toward school that’s manifested in recent months.

The mom said last week she met with administrators at the school and was told healthy snacks were part of the school’s learning environment.

“I was told it was part of the health curriculum or health unit, and he had to eat healthy food,” said the mother.

“I said (my son) should be in class eating with the other kids. I understand healthy eating, but you’re not going to tell me what to feed my child.”

According to the Calgary Board of Education’s nutrition policy, only “healthy food and beverage” options are sold or provided in the district’s schools, however it doesn’t apply to snacks or lunches packed for students by their parents.

I remember one part of Shrillary’s platform was to remove kids from their parents AT BIRTH & HAVE THE GOVERNMENT RAISE THEM.

And she still wonders why she lost.

The staff involved should be disciplined and instructed in normal human behaviour.

“Shaming” a child for eating a snack from home is reprehensible and inexcusable. If mom says it’s OK, it’s OK!

I would have stormed into the administrator’s office with multiple copies of my banana bread recipe & demanded to know what part of this recipe isn’t healthy?

Christians in the USA have it good, we are blessed, but the country is becoming increasing wicked.

By "disciplined", I hope you mean something like "flogged over a barrel, then pilloried for two weeks".

Public shaming...an old commie tactic.

I remember being banished to the hall more than once when I was in the first grade. Far from traumatizing me, it seemed to confirm my status as one of the ringleaders of the anarchy faction in my class.

He wasn’t shamed for eating banana bread, he was shamed for not keeping his parents in line with the collective sheeple mind.

I am not kidding.

I agree. But as the country becomes more wicked, we can either go along or become ostracized.

My pastor had a very interesting visual yesterday. It is quite simple.

He used music stands to illustrate. There is God’s way/law on one music stand. Then there is man’s way on another music stand, and let’s say they are 10ft apartment, and many believers are somewhere in the middle. Then over a few years, man’s way gets further from God’s way and he moved the music stand another 5 ft away, and we are still in the middle. But as this happens, we still drift away from God’s way, while we are still relatively in the middle.

What gets really crazy, is how fast man’s ways are increasing its distance from God’s way, it is accelerating. I went to high school just 20 years ago, and gay jokes were still acceptable. Now we have to celebrate them. The amount of piercings and tattoos has exploded. When I drive by the high school, almost every girl is wearing yoga pants, and no one is dressed very decently.

I don’t know if it is getting harder , or that it always been hard to reject the World’s ways.

then a bunch of kids that just need some significant discipline

Actually, I think this woman is probably talking about Aspberger's Syndrome. A few years ago, the powers that be decided that there is no such thing; however, as a mother of a girl who fit all the parameters of Aspberger's Syndrome, I have to disagree.

My daughter is a very intelligent young woman. She has trouble in social situations. Always has had that trouble. (Confession: When going throught the signs of Aspbergers, I saw myself in a lot of the enumerated signs. To this day, I have a terrible time in social situations and keeping relationships going --- except for my marriage which has at this point, clocked in 36 years).

So, high functioning autism children don't need firmer discipline, although a routine is very important in their lives. The 1st grade teacher that my daughter had put a list of things for her to do when she arrived in the morning. It was very helpful to her to get her into a routine in the morning.

Bullies in charge. Mom, bully up! Don’t get mad, get even. It’s the only way to handle bully teachers. They will screw up again, soon enough.

It’s amazing how many parents buy a house because it’s pretty without checking out the school. First and formost, you should check out the school and then hunt for the house. Too many don’t volunteer or attend school activities so have no idea what’s really going on in their child’s life 8 hours a day. Be the squeaky wheel. Get involved. If you don’t like something, address your concerns with the principal or school board. If that don’t get the goal then run for school board or take it to the newspaper.

We had a decent school but once a year there was usually some problem. A well placed phone call or two usually did the trick. And boy howdy, did I know just who to call or what law to quote, hee hee.

The specifics of honey vs. sugar:

Your body breaks down food into glucose, its main source of fuel. White sugar is comprised of about 50 percent glucose and 50 percent fructose, the sugar that is typically found in fruits. These sugars are usually found bound together, making the molecule sucrose. Overall, it is broken down very easily, leading to a big surge in blood glucose. One tablespoon of sugar yields about 49 calories and about 15 grams of carbohydrate.

Honey is also mostly sugar, but is only about 30 percent glucose and less than 40 percent fructose. Unlike sugar, these are typically found in the free form, meaning honey is digested a little differently than white sugar. The rest of honey is mainly comprised of about 20 other sugars, some of which are much more complex, and dextrin, a type of starchy fiber. Honey, which is a little denser than sugar, contains about 68 calories and 17.2 grams of carbohydrate per tablespoon. However, because of the fact that fructose is sweeter than glucose, and the molecules are not bound up as sucrose, honey tastes sweeter. Because of this, people often use less of it, negating the slight difference in calories.

From Food Myths Debunked

IOW - honey is sugar. Even unsweetened applesauce is sugar, fructose to be precise.

Can anybody tell me why Banana bread is considered an unhealthy food?

Because it's something people actually enjoy eating.

Well, duh! It’s not the 1 - 1 1/2 cups of white sugar most recipes call for.
