1) Since 3/4 of the random selectees voluntarily got off the plane, maybe they could have tried picking someone else?

2) Since UAL caused the problem by selling more product than they could actually deliver, maybe they should stop doing that?

I am totally against “bumping” people against their will, especially when it typically is so an employee can dead head a ride.

The inconvenience when in effect you have paid for a contract for transportation is significant. Ailrines need to compensate appropriately if they think it’s cost effective to overbook - pay those more than one free ticket, I say give them two tickets to anywhere domestically and a $500 hotel voucher. That will ususally work as an incentive.

If not, then hire a lear jet to fly the overbooked passengers.

United does have now a PR mess on their hands. They should have had an auctioneer and paid to the highest bidder an option to stay and wait for the next flight.

The flight was not overbooked.

United Airlines had 4 United employees flying standby and they were removing ticked passengers to give their employees flying standby the seats held by ticketed passengers.

It is not clear if the passenger pulled off was also flying standby or was confirmed for that flight.

United is going to lose their ass on the lawsuit that this guy files.

Wait a minute. That passenger paid for a flight to Louisville, Kentucky. The airline accepted his payment for a flight to Louisville, Kentucky. That passenger should go to Louisville, Kentucky. Period.

Since that didn’t happen, and there was no act of G-d, that passenger should sue, and sue for millions.

Just when I think there’s no use for attorneys, something like this comes along.

This is on Drudge, has had a bunch of threads here and I’ve seen it on local news sites and been told that there are twitter hashtags about it. Can a late night show parody be far behind?

This will be taught in business schools and public relations classes under “Brand Destroyers and Other Dumb Moves That Kill Businesses.” Photos of United Airlines, JCPenney’s and Target will be part of the text.

He is much more important than everyone else, it seems.

A SMART doctor would have calmly talked with them and explained he was a doctor, and needed to see patients- the airlines could have then selected someone else.

I worry about his patients if he is like this. I am blaming the doctor- if he really is one.

No, United should have told their standing-by employees that standing by means not necessarily getting the flight you want. UAL should be busted in the chops if these are all the facts.

No, no, no. The passenger was in the right, 100% in the right. If you buy something, you have a right to that thing. Period.

And if someone should try take from you what you bought, you SHOULD protest, and you should protest in the loudest way possible.

Heck, that guy was restrained compared to what I’d do.

it’s worse than that according to the story: “asked for four passengers to relinquish their seats for airline employees on stand-by.”

So they didn’t overbook - they needed the seats to get their own employees to their next destination. Talk about bad PR.

I’ve had to fly a lot recently for work - every friggin’ set (usually I have to get a connection) of flights has had either “delayed due to late inbound plane arrival”, “delayed due to late crew arrival”, or “delayed due to air traffic control” (except one series out of 32 sets).

There was 1 due to weather - everything else was something that was related to scheduling, etc.

Have had 3 flights that had to “rebalance” the weight due to excess luggage, one they offered vouchers for $500 to get weight off - I took one of those.
