As KFC shuns some antibiotics, U.S. chicken industry deploys wet wipes, oregano

To meet increasing demand for meat raised without certain antibiotics, top U.S. chicken company Tyson Foods Inc and rival producers are turning to sanitizing wipes, bacteria-reducing fog and even oregano to keep birds healthy.

Some have spent years of trial and error on new techniques to figure out replacements for human drugs, part of a fight against the rise of dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria in people. Yum Brands Inc's KFC on Friday became the last of the big three U.S. chicken restaurants to move away from antibiotics important to human medicine.

McDonald's Corp and privately held Chick-fil-A had already made similar commitments. Nationwide, more than 42 percent of the U.S. chicken industry has already committed to reducing the use of antibiotics, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

With KFC's move, that number is set to grow. KFC U.S. President Kevin Hochman called the chain's move a "major milestone" that should significantly increase the supply of bone-in chicken raised without medically important antibiotics. It should also open the door for smaller chains to follow KFC's move, he told Reuters.

KFC, which sells more than 65 million buckets of chicken a year, estimated that one-third of its suppliers were already transitioning to chicken raised with fewer antibiotics. The company said it was late to shift away from human antibiotics because it had to persuade suppliers of bone-in chickens it uses to make the change......snip/

......Perdue Farms, a competitor, said it eliminated the routine use of all antibiotics in chicken last year. It now puts oregano in birds' water, banking on the herb's antioxidants to keep them healthy, and takes other steps to avoid drugs.......

Oregano is not as odd as it sounds; my best student of the mid 1990s, who’s now an ARNP in NJ and just saved her husband’s life by diagnosing a heart defect the local cardio doc missed, swears by it as an alternative to the basic antibiotics.

A brief but ugly life; however, having had chickens once in my long-ago earth mother past, and having dealt with the “organic” Amish and their practices, I’d say it has always been thus.

And at least we don’t have to chop their heads off anymore. The children, little ghouls that they are, were always ready to be there when my husband did in our latest crop of chickens. If it weren’t for human beings eating them, chickens would rule the world, even more than cockroaches.

That said, I’m glad they’re trying other methods of feeding them, because a lot of herbal things (oregano and rosemary, for example) are very effective and don’t overdose you on antibiotics that you might need at some point in your life.

And the rate of food-borne illness skyrockets.

Not sure I like this.

CFA knuckled under? Geesh.

Interesting. Sentimentality is a fine in movies, but the reality of raising farm animals is anything but romantic. I wonder whether the consequences of this anti-antibiotic policy will have unintended consequences similar to the anti-DDT policy at the beginning of the end of Progress in America.

We don’t eat KFC any more because we always end up ill after. And that is with abnormally large chicken breasts loaded with antibiotics and hormones.

Me either but because it just doesn’t taste good anymore.

Anyone who delivers pizza unarmed is gambling with their life.

The last time I tried to eat their chicken I couldn’t finish my meal because it was horrible.

YUM has bought KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell and ruined them. I don’t eat at any of these restaurants anymore. YUM buys a company with a good product and finds ways to cut prices (cut quality).

I am old enough to remember Pizza Hut as a fantastic place to go with a date for a great pizza that made their dough fresh every day. They were the elite pizza restaurant. YUM bought the company and turned it in to competition for the $5 pizza places like Mr. Cesar’s.

I am a capitalist and I believe in profit but I also believe that a quality product will always be able to turn a profit.

YUM will never get money from me

I worked in the chicken industry and a hatchery years ago. The grower is required by the supplier of the chicks, to provide enough space so each chicken has several square feet to himself. In this the chickens appear to be bunched up in one end of one house. Bet there is a large amount of clear space behind the person taking the video.

No, actually, these are good alternatives to the antibiotics that affect humans which, because of involuntary overuse through diet, have created a class of resistant bugs.

I’m not a nature freak, but a lot of herbs are extremely effective in disinfecting and purifying, and actually used to be used in chicken coops, barns, etc.

The problem with DDT was that, first of all, it was junk science and DDT was not responsible for what they claimed, and secondly, that they had no effective substitute.

Also, it wasn’t harmful to human beings, within reason. As a child, I was one of the many who ran behind the DDT trucks, inhaling deeply because for some reason children like the smell, and many decades later, I’m still alive to tell about it...

I found a piece of garbage from KFC once... short story, it had MSG labeled as a main ingredient. This was a wrapper that held the herbs and spices for the chicken fry.

IMHO, Bojangles has the best chicken. The chicken breasts at Bojangles are twice the size of KFC. And Bojangles is far tastier and juicier too.

Hey, that looks like the mosquito man that used to drive around our neighborhood in NJ when I was a kid.

When the mosquitoes got really bad, he’d come around and the kids would all play in the smoke behind the truck.

And sure enough, every year, some kid would get killed by being struck by a car who COULD NOT see him in the smoke.
