Free, and has performed flawlessly.
Avira and Avast are pretty good and free.
No single product is 100% effective, and the ratings change from month-to-month. Users are wise to run scans with other tools on occasion. I sometunes run Trend Micro's Housecall online, for added peace of mind. Windows Defender meets my needs at this time, and I will continue to recommend it to those who rely on my opinion. Especially those who are generally judicious on their web-surfing habits and are cautious with links and attachments in email. As is often uttered here: Play stupid games, win stupid prizes...
I have tried many of them. I went with free and paid. Each program finds viruses if they are there I guess. You also need a anti spyware program.
I use right now:
Webroot for anti-virus
For spyware and especially for blocking Ransomware I have Malwarebytes

I have an image backup of my windows immediately after a clean install and with a few essential drivers and programs installed.
I do an incremental files backup of my data files pretty often. The incremental ones take only a few minutes.
To do a restore I first restore from the image backup and then restore from the files backup.
I don’t use any anti-anything software and seldom have a problem.
Unless you make it a habit of browsing porn websites or using TOR to browse onion websites you really have nothing to worry about. Viruses are not very common anymore. Most malware is spread through illegitimate advertisements.

Avast free version and Iobit Malware Fighter, also free. Run them once a week, almost never have a detection.
I used to use Malwarebytes at one time but it suddenly went crazy on me, running constantly, so I deleted it.
I’ve never had a problem, but I also avoid the seedier parts of the internet so I am a low risk user.
I’ve used Norton for a long time. They sent me an email the other day saying they’ve added a VPN connector and a PC tune up app, so I went for both. I thought that was good and timely service.

I uae a.combo of kaspersky and malwarebytes. Windows defender is free and not horrible.

We’ve had trouble with Malwarebytes — especially their tech support.
The PCs we bought in June from Best Buy came with Webroot, and a ransomware got through.
Truthfully, I’ve had good luck with AVG free. Also, my sister had not-free Kaspersky on her PC and had maximum trouble in varied ways. She didn’t think it was virus-related because of Kaspersky being installed. Finally, she downloaded AVG free and when it did the first scan it knocked out a bunch of bad stuff.
I figure they all have their good points and bad points; nothing is perfect.
Linux Virtual machine for browsing is the joint.
I dunno, I switched to Mac three years ago and need no virus protection and have had zero problems. In fact Apple care said do not install any Mac virus protection. I do admit I like the window os better as I use it at work everyday but although Mac stuff is weird but at least I don’t worry about viruses and pay my bills every month with no worries.
