In 1900 clear up to 1960’s it would not have been so why are things different now? Have you forgotten there was a time and place in America when an unmarried woman with a child (who was not widowed) would never have dared to do such a thing? Like said before we know father is not dead or the news would have ran with that excuse.
Have you forgotten that yes a child would have been told this at one time? Society has accepted free sex so much that now this language shocks you? A child born out of wedlock, with no father is what it is.
