For the first time, The Associated Press now permits journalists to use "they" as a singular pronoun. The AP announced the style change Friday at the American Copy Editors Society conference in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The change follows years of questions among copy editors, reporters and editors about the use of language specifically about people who are non-binary and don't use gendered pronouns.
The change is in effect online and will be in the print edition of the 2017 AP Stylebook on May 31. The new edition includes 200 new and updated entries.

The dictionary like the Constitution, the left decides is changeable.
Ah, yes. By all means. Rearrange the deck chairs.
They should only be used in the singular when referring to schizophrenics.
Non-binary persons should be called “it”.
I thought that depends on what the definition of what is is.
THEY want to use ‘they’ so as not to identify who ‘they’ are, so the lies cannot be traced back to ‘THEM’.
The angle and rate of our society’s descent are increasingly rapidly. The end will come suddenly.
Stalinists lie. Always
It always bothers me when people use “they” to replace “he or she”. It’s been in use for a very long time.
I guess it’s now officially acceptable. I still don’t like it.
Only one generation of fools....
...straight into the dumpster.
Similar to how I refer to them, as "It!" with a capital letter. Watched a lot of alien monster movies as a kid. What shouldn't be, but is out there.
They is OK when describing a single person who’s not binary?
Getting so sick and tired of seeing this binary word. It is getting shoveled into every nook and cranny of the blogosphere (another term I detest); just about every opinion piece (I’ve read it three times already this morning) It’s made its way into the eletist language of right and left having emigrated from computer science and mathematics. Keep it there.
I do mind, the Dude minds. This will not stand, ya know, this aggression will not stand, man.
Just a logical follow-on from the now gender-neutral “guys.”
Can we go with Anglo-Saxon orthography too? At least that would make more sense than a “singular they”.
They is? They was? They knows?
I can haz a cheezeberger?
So from now on, it’s “from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs.”
Using ‘they’ is better than using Ze or Zit.
I don't like it either, but it's only a "guide." AP is a needed service, but only that.
What’s wrong with “it”?
