Is there anything out there that could replace MS10 on current PC’s?

Solution?

Never leave the Free Republic website.

And don’t open any email from foreign countries or from attractive women who claim they want to meet you.

The predatory marketing of MS continues. It will cost them more than they think.

This just about begs for a “get a mac” reply.

Let’s start with the basics. Intel introduced its so-called 6th Generation Skylake processor in August 2015. It slowly replaced the older Broadwell series, all of which will continue to work with Win7 and 8.1.</i>Apparently, in this writer’s “mind” a computer working consists of receiving regular loads of spyware from Microshaft. 1. Set a restore point now; when the update trashes your machine, try to restore to March 25. Maybe it will work.

2. Shut off all M$ updates now. Win7 should have its biggest holes patched by now; make sure you have good virus and malware software, and keep it up to date.

3. Upgrade to Mint.

Well, if Microshaft is that determined that they don’t want my business, I can’t really force it on them. Not that they’re currently fielding anything is but anyway, so they haven’t really lost anything.

MSFT’s pronouncements sound like government speak.

I am running Win 7 Pro and have had updates turned off for over a year with no downside. Gee, that was easy*.

As far as I’m concerned, Win 7 is my last OS.

On the other hand, maybe I’ve just been lucky.

* Disclaimer: I am using a good anti-virus program that updates itself at least daily, run weekly scans with the av program and Malwarebytes, use Ad Block Plus and Ghostery with my browser and am really careful where I go on the Internet.

A basic question for a non-techie:

I’m running Win 7 on a Dell desktop. How do I find out whether I’m affected by the upcoming MS update. I’ve seen the machine list on the Dell link above and need to now which machine I’m using (without unplugging everything and pulling it out from behind my desk). Is machine and chip information available via the control panel and if so, how do I access it?

I absolutely refuse to go back to Windows 10. I tried it on my PC a year ago and it was unbearable. It was always uploading and doing updates like every other day for a half hour or longer at a pop. I was OFF my machine, waiting, waiting, more than I was on.
I took my machine to my neighborhood hole in the wall computer shop and begged them to take Windows 10 off. When the guy said it would cost $200, I allowed him to talk me into a new laptop with Windows 7. I’m happy now. Don’t mess up my life. Microsoft cretins.

Seems to me the most logical thing that will happen is the processors won’t update but everything else will. Windows will try to scare you into updating to Windows 10 but that’s all.

I finally updated to Win10 (my SD drive went kablooey 3 days before its warranty expired so I just bought a newer larger one.)
It is a long slow process of getting things back to working comfortably.
Win10 is not too bad.
